One subtle development that appears to have been overlooked this week is the Government’s move to publish a new guide for civil engineering (street works), which sets the best practice when constructing the next generation of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) style broadband ISP networks.

Bradford-based UK ISP Exa Networks has been chosen by Cityfibre to supply businesses and education sites over their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network in West Sussex, which is being built with support from the Government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has released their latest results to the end of June 2018 (financial Q4 17/18), which reveals that “Fibre” (FTTC) penetration has risen to 38% (up from 33% six months ago) of their UK broadband base. Plus they’re planning an early Sky Mobile launch of 5G and have a new broadband router coming.

After deploying in London, Leeds and Glasgow, BT has announced the first roll-out of 14 InLinkUK smart kiosks in central Southampton (Hampshire), which claim to offer the “UK’s fastest free public Wi-Fi” (‘up to’ 1Gbps), free UK phone calls, USB device charging and a range of other digital services to people in the vicinity.

Residents at a new block of flats on the Bohemy Fields development in Hastings (East Sussex, UK) have become deeply despondent after finding that their homes, which began being occupied during May 2018, have yet to even be connected to Openreach’s (BT) national broadband ISP network.

Telecoms giant Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which saw them add +52,000 new broadband and phone customers (down from +65,000 in the previous quarter) to total 435,000. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,432,000 (quarterly fall of -83,000).

Customers of UK mobile operator EE with the BTSport App can now make use of a new TV casting feature from their Smartphone, which enables them to watch the content in HD on multiple devices. As a bonus the first 3 months of access will be offered free and won’t suck your data allowance.

Cityfibre has named the first streets in Aberdeen (Scotland) to benefit from their £40m (private investment) deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network with UK ISP Vodafone, which has just this week officially entered the construction phase.

Mobile operator EE will tomorrow launch a range of new “Flex plans,” which appear to be targeted at pay-as-you-go customers but ask them to make regular payments like a Pay Monthly service. But with Flex there’s no contract to worry about and you can “change, pause or stop the plan and take a break whenever [you] like.”

UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that customers of their TeraByte home broadband packages (Home::1), which includes 1000GB (GigaBytes) of monthly usage, will see their usage allowance double to 2000GB (2 TeraBytes) from August 2018, at no extra cost.

Openreach (BT) is to cut the prices of their wholesale “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) products to ISPs by up to 40%, which they say is designed to encourage providers to switch more of their old copper line (ADSL) users on to faster internet connections and this in turn will help to improve coverage.

The national telecoms regulator has today followed yesterday’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (here) by setting out the core regulatory changes that they intend to pursue, which will support the government’s new plan and aim to spread Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to all by 2033.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has confirmed that customers of their slower ADSL2+ based copper line broadband packages have been seeing faster speeds and improved service stability since they adopted a new system of Dynamic Line Management (DLM) from ASSIA (Adaptive Spectrum and Signal Alignment, Inc.).

The latest Engine Customer Experience Report 2018 has claimed that the UK Broadband & Pay-TV media sector has risen one spot to 8th place for best customer service and experience thanks to a 3% rise, putting it just ahead of the mobile sector and utilities (9th). But overall this is still way down the sector ranking table.

The Essex County Council (ECC) has awarded Openreach (BT) with a £3.4m contract to rollout “superfast broadband” (FTTC/P) ISP networks to cover an additional 3,100 premises in the UK county, which includes 1,500 in the borough of Basildon and 1,600 in the district of Braintree.

After some initial warnings last week, cable operator Virgin Media has over the weekend confirmed that “unfortunately no agreement has been reached” on the fate of their UKTV channels line-up (10 channels inc. the 5 free-to-air channels, such as Dave), which means that they’ve been pulled as of midnight on 22nd July 2018.
