Underground optical fibre networks aren’t just brilliant at delivering ultrafast broadband ISP speeds to UK homes. A team of German scientists have found that they can also be used to detect Earthquakes, as well as other seismic signals from hammer shots, passing cars or wave movements in the ocean.

A dispute between Openreach (BT), the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme and the local authority’s Connecting Cumbria project appears to be stalling a plan that could otherwise see fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP services extended to a number of previously excluded villages.

The Government’s Intellectual Property Office has today published its 8th study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile users, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.525 million people) had downloaded at least one item of “illegal” online content (unchanged from 2017).

The national UK telecommunications and media regulator, Ofcom, has promoted their existing Competition Director, Yih-Choung Teh, to be the new Group Strategy and Research Director. Yih-Choung was previously Ofcom’s Competition Director and replaces Dr Steve Unger in the strategy role.

The Office of the Telecoms Adjudicator (OTA) has said that ISPs and Openreach “remain some distance apart” from an agreement on payments as part of Ofcom’s forthcoming automatic compensation system, which will force providers to compensate consumers for a total loss of broadband connectivity.

A new report published by the Local Government Association, which represents around 370 councils across England and Wales, has warned that rural communities could face a post-Brexit “perfect storm” from poor broadband ISP and mobile connectivity, unaffordable homes, skills haps and weak healthcare etc.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has announced that up to 5,000 properties in Ballyclare and 1,200 in Portadown, Northern Ireland, will be the next to gain access to their 350Mbps capable ultrafast broadband and TV services under the on-going £3bn Project Lightning network extension.

The B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North) ISP project, which has been deploying a 1Gbps community built and funded Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to rural UK homes since 2012, appears to have hit a snag with Lancashire County Council hampering their UK rollout in both Caton and Halton.
