The Independent Networks Co-operative Association last night unveiled the winners of their inaugural 2018 awards event (The INCAs), which aims to recognise and celebrate the best alternative broadband network providers (altnets) from across the United Kingdom. Wins were secured by Hyperoptic, KCOM and others.

ISPreview.co.uk has learnt that cable ISP Virgin Media have recently started inviting selected customers to take part in a secret new “broadband trial” (VMBW2) for Smart Wi-Fi technology, which aims to boost the overall network performance and improve connectivity to WiFi enabled devices.

The dominant ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has announced the introduction of their new “PRO Team” service, which claims to be the “first of its kind in the UK” and involves sending out a special engineering team to help solve customers’ Wi-Fi woes, router problems and buffering issues for free.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that the next UK cities and towns to benefit from their “Fibre First” programme, which aims to roll-out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3 million premises by the end of 2020, will be Nottingham and Belfast.

ISP TalkTalk has today announced the launch of their new three-point “Fairer Broadband Charter,” which seems to have been largely designed to promote some of the provider’s key selling points and among other things “challenges the telecoms industry” to end mid-contract broadband price hikes.

London focused UK ISP G.Networks and their investment partner Albion Capital have closed a new deal, which will result in Cube Infrastructure Managers (Cube IM) providing an “initial” £60m of additional funding to help roll-out FTTP “ultra-fast broadband” to serve 120,000 premises (“businesses and residents“).

Last year UK ISP Hyperoptic announced that “thousands” of homes across 12 of Thurrock’s (Essex) social housing developments would get access to their 1Gbps fibre optic (FTTP/B) broadband network. Today we learn that a further 20 such sites will benefit, thanks to an extension of their agreement with the Council.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Wildanet is on course to complete a successful crowdfunding raise of over £1m thanks to at least 320 investors. This will enable them to expand their network to reach around 12,000 customers in some increasingly remote rural parts of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and possibly even South Wales.

The Balquhidder Community Broadband (CIC) project, which with support from UK ISP Bogons and the Stirling Council has begun building its own 1Gbps FTTP broadband network in a remote part of Scotland, has successfully won the Scottish Rural Action (SRA) Transport & Infrastructure Award for 2018.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has told ISPreview.co.uk that they still “plan to be at the heart of Britain’s full-fibre future” by deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 3 million premises, which follows nearly a year of almost complete silence since the project was unveiled.

The UK telecoms regulator has today begun consulting on their new Business Connectivity Market Review 2018/19 (BCMR), which among other things is proposing “unrestricted access” to Openreach’s (BT) cable ducts / telegraph poles to boost fibre broadband. It will also try again to impose a Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product.

Brittany Ferries, the cross-channel ferry company that operates a large fleet of ferries and cruise ships between France and the UK, Ireland, and Spain, and between the UK and Spain, has partnered up with Telenor Maritime to upgrade their on-board mobile and WiFi connectivity for passengers.

UK ISP Signa Technologies (Moorsweb) informs ISPreview.co.uk that their fixed wireless broadband network has been extended to cover more rural homes on the remote North Yorkshire Moors. Customers can expect download speeds of up to 30Mbps (10Mbps upload) and there are plans for a 100Mbps service.

Congratulations are in order after “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband provider Hyperoptic scooped two big wins at the annual 2018 World Communications Awards last night, which saw the ISP secure top spots for both the “Broadband Pioneer” and “CEO of the Year” awards. The latter went to MD Dana Tobak.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they’ve adopted the LTE-Advanced based Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, which will enable them to combine several radio spectrum bands in order to boost 4G (Mobile Broadband) speeds for their customers. Sadly the initial coverage is limited.

ISP Vodafone UK has today reduced the monthly price of their “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental packages slightly by £1, which means that new subscribers can take their 35Mbps (average speed) service from £20 per month or £26 for 63Mbps (non-existing mobile customers pay slightly more).
