The 2019 Halifax Quality of Life Survey (Bank of Scotland) has just been published, which balances a combination of broadband speed, health, crime rate, weather, employment, happiness and skills in order to identify the best places to live in the UK. Once again Orkney in Scotland comes top of the list.

A new ruling by HMRC, which appears to say that UK broadband ISPs acting as a Community Benefit Societies (CBS) to build their own local networks can no longer make use of tax breaks under the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), could have serious repercussions for “full fibre” projects in rural areas.

Mobile operator Vodafone has called it a “genuine mistake” after one of their cell sites at London’s Gatwick airport was spotted using Three UK’s slice of the 4G friendly 1800MHz radio spectrum band. The latter is now checking to see whether any other such mistakes have been made.

A new case study has offered an interesting insight into how ISP WightFibre has been able to reduce the costs of their £35m “Gigabit Island” project, which aims to roll-out a 1Gbps FTTP broadband network to cover 53,000 of the 61,000 homes on the Isle of Wight (South of Hampshire, England) by the end of 2021.

Telecoms operator and ISP Vodafone UK has released their latest quarterly results to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19), which saw them add another 46,000 fixed line broadband ISP customers to total 525,000 (up from +44K added in the previous quarter). Meanwhile their mobile base grew to 17,175,000 (quarterly rise of 120,000).

Last March the Belfast City Council (BCC) secured a public investment of £11.5m to support their plans for deploying a 1Gbps+ capable “full fibre” network, which would connect public sites across the city. Since then we’ve been waiting for news on the contract and Openreach (BT) may have just given a clue.

The Welsh Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee has warned that Mobile coverage in Wales “consistently lags behind the rest of the UK,” which could hamper the roll-out of future Gigabit capable 5G services unless changes are made (e.g. allowing 30m tall masts, stricter coverage requirements and more engagement).

Cable giant Comcast, which toward the end of last year gobbled Sky’s pan-European TV and broadband ISP business with a bid of £30bn (here), has given some early hints about what changes might result from the purchase. So far all the talk is of “free” ad-supported TV content via sibling NOW TV and voice improvements.

Cityfibre and ISP partner Vodafone have recruited a former police communications director, Charles Kitchin, to oversee the £20m roll-out of their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network for homes and businesses in the UK city of Cambridge.

Mobile operators Vodafone and O2 have today announced a tentative agreement that will see their current UK network sharing deal being extended to include future 5G (mobile broadband) services. On top of that they’re also exploring the prospect of delivering a “shared, future proof fibre” (fibre optic) transmission network.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has just published its latest take-up data to the end of September 2018 for its state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which has so far extended coverage to 5,011,052 extra premises.
