The founder and former CEO of UK rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, Matthew Hare, has quietly used £1m of his own money to setup a new broadband provider called Zzoomm, which is an alternative network (altnet) that will focus on building 1Gbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks to homes in smaller cities and suburbs.

A new Opinium survey of 1,001 UK adults, which was commissioned by uSwitch.com and conducted during mid December 2018, has found that 86% of rail travellers struggle to connect to the internet via WiFi or 3G / 4G mobile (mobile broadband) on their Smartphones while commuting to work.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed that they intend to offer the Huawei 5G CPE Pro device as a “home router” alongside their future mobile broadband service for UK homes, which can in theory deliver peak speeds of “up to” 4.6Gbps in the sub-6GHz radio spectrum bands or up to 6.5Gbps using mmWave spectrum.

Business internet provider Trunk Networks has reduced the one-off installation cost of their Openreach based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband packages from £113 to £50 +vat until 31st May 2019.

It’s nearly a year since the Government launched their £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable connection. The latest data reveals that this has helped to create a total of 3,660 connections (value of £8,756,443).

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed that they’re probing mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) over a network outage that occurred on 6th December 2018.

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which among other things supplies broadband connectivity to around 3,000 schools (c.1 million children) in the UK’s capital city, claims to have become the first educational technology company and ISP to work with City of London Police (CLP) in order to block known piracy websites.

A new report from the National Infrastructure Commission warns the UK Government not to “take their eye off the ball,” particularly after it identified that a large number of previously accepted recommendations (some related to mobile and “full fibre” FTTP broadband ISP connectivity) had yet to be implemented.

Several homes in the tiny rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch can now access broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps thanks to a new 5G style trial, which has been supported by funding from the UK Government alongside solutions from Broadway Partners and Cambridge Communication Systems.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica), which is currently home to a UK customer base of 32.6 million, has today announced that they will commence the roll-out of their next generation ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network during 2019. The first cities to benefit will be Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London.

Comparison site Compare the Market has updated an interesting comparison of 54 countries, which ranks each by their average broadband download speed, upload speed and monthly package price. Sadly the UK ranks just 27th for downloads (55.14Mbps), 39th for uploads (12.72Mbps) and 20th for price (£31.27).

Openreach (BT) has claimed that they could boost the roll-out of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by using a new type of air-blown ribbon fibre cable, which can be deployed “five times faster” than conventional cabling and is now under trial in Leeds UK.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone have today announced that they’ll soon be launching a new cloud controlled “smart home network” solution for customers of their home broadband service, which will work to deliver “fast, reliable, Wi-Fi signal to every corner of the home.”

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve appointed City Development Managers for their “city wide” 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network builds in Huddersfield (£30m project) and Leeds (£120m). Local homes will be supplied via UK ISP Vodafone.

A new survey of 8,000 people living across eight European countries, which was commissioned by cable ISP Liberty Global (Virgin Media), has examined the value of home connectivity to consumers and found that broadband (inc. WiFi) scores higher than sex, holidays, favourite TV channel(s) and chocolate.
