After four months of waiting there are now signs that the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) dispute over UK ISP Gigaclear’s stalled, and significantly delayed, roll-out of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband in the region might finally be reaching a resolution.

The telecoms regulator has warned O2 (Telefonica UK) that there are “reasonable grounds” for believing that they failed to provide “accurate and complete answers” as part of last year’s investigation into the mobile operator’s Traffic Management practices on their 3G and 4G network.

A new report from Hatch Regeneris, which was commissioned by the BT Group, has estimated that the telecoms and broadband ISP giant generated a £22.8 billion contribution to the UK economy (expressed as GVA – Gross Value Added) during the 2017/18 financial year (down from £23.1bn in 2016).

The Welsh Government has quietly released some additional coverage data on the scale of their Phase 2 broadband roll-out contract with BT (Openreach), which is expected to provide 26,000 premises with access to “fast reliable broadband” (mostly ultrafast FTTP) by March 2021 at a cost of nearly £22.5m.

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

The AutoAir project, which is supported by a £4.1m Government grant, has confirmed that the UK’s first independent 5G enabled trial of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) will go live this month at the Millbrook Proving Ground (Bedfordshire). Mobile broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps are expected.

Mobile operator Three UK has launched a new 3G / 4G supporting Mobile Broadband router and data plan called HomeFi that’s aimed at home users, which is one of the first such packages that we’ve seen to include “unlimited data” and at a cost of just £22 per month on a 24 month contract term.

Openreach is to trial a special discount for their consumer friendly Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP tiers, which will enable providers in certain specific “Fibre First” exchange areas to offer free connections and cheaper rental so as to test or encourage migrations to “full fibre” lines.

The former CEO of Interoute (one of Europe’s largest fibre networks), Gareth Williams, has today been appointed as the CEO of rural FTTP broadband ISP Gigaclear. Meanwhile the company’s Interim Chief Executive, Mike Surrey, will remain with the business until the end of March to ensure an orderly handover.

City focused full fibre broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which already covers well over 500,000 UK premises, has launched a new promotion that slashes the cost of their top Gigabit tier (average speed of 900Mbps) to just £38 per month (plus a £19 one-off activation fee) for the first 12 months of service (£60 thereafter).

A new Portsmouth (Hampshire) based ISP called toob has surfaced that claims to have secured enough investment to deploy a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network “at scale” across parts of the UK, which aims to serve businesses and homes. But there’s a strong Vodafone connection.

The latest quarterly results from TalkTalk to the end of 2018 (Q3 FY19) has seen the ISP add a further +44,000 on-net broadband customers to total 4,287,000 (up from the +24k added in the previous quarter), although sadly there’s not much of an update on their “FibreNation” FTTH deployment.
