The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today said they’re “disappointed” with Ofcom’s Annual Plan for 2019/20 because it “completely overlooked” some important areas. The plan summarises all of the major work the regulator intends to do (e.g. improving broadband cover and consumer protections).

The community built and funded rural UK ISP B4RN, which has been rolling out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote parts of Cheshire, Cumbria, Essex, Lancashire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Yorkshire, looks to be preparing a crowdfunding drive in the hope of raising £3m to help it expand.

Crowd-sourced data analyst firm OpenSignal has today published a new report that examines how future 5G based Mobile Broadband networks could solve the congestion problems of current 4G networks, which includes a ranking of 77 countries by average download speed experienced at different times of day.

Openreach have begun developing a new chatbot called EiVA (Enterprise Intelligent Virtual Assistant) that could improve how UK ISPs interact with the network operator. Separately data analytics firm Qlik has claimed that they’ve helped to halve the time it takes to connect up “fibre broadband” customers.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that they’ve begun working with Nokia to test a new software-based cloud core network, which they say is a “world first“. This will be used to support the forthcoming roll-out of their next generation 5G services (mobile broadband and fixed wireless).

The inevitable has happened. Fixed wireless broadband ISP Relish, which use to be part of UK Broadband Ltd. until the latter was gobbled up in 2017 by mobile operator Three UK for £250m (here), is being re-branded from 1st April 2019 to reflect the name of its parent – Three Broadband – and their future plans.

A new piece of research from the Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank that advises the Government, has revealed some of the reasons why 8.4% of the UK population have never used the internet (non-users). Sadly the majority of that group simply have no interest in going online.

Broadband ISPs Virgin Media and MS3 have been fined £25,000 and £2,000 respectively by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, after both companies missed the deadline for responding to a formal information request as part of the on-going Business Connectivity Market Review 2019 (BCMR) consultation.

Download speeds of up to 200Mbps have been seen after Vodafone UK added Manchester Airport to their public test sites for future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology. As a result travellers have been able to try ultrafast broadband speeds by connecting to the new network via WiFi.

As promised Openreach’s (BT) “Fibre First” programme has recently published a full list of 84 UK exchange areas where their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is either already being deployed or will start to be deployed within the next three months.

Last week we revealed that UK ISP Sky Broadband and Sky TV were set to increase their prices from the 1st April 2019 (here), but at the time we didn’t know the details. Sky has today published this detail, which for example confirms that their FTTC “fibre broadband” packages will increase by +£2 monthly.

The UK Space Agency has awarded funding of £18 million to SpaceX rival OneWeb, which is currently in the process of building a huge constellation of 882 small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites that will be able to supply fast broadband speeds at a lower latency to almost any part of the world.

The latest independent analysis of broadband coverage in the UK has indicated that some 11.5% of new build homes constructed in 2018 (c.124,000 premises) still lack access to superfast internet speeds of 30Mbps+. Similarly only 61.6% of those built were able to access a “full fibre” (FTTH) ISP network.

The latest independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s new £2.5bn project to roll-out a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network (Vodafone Gigafast Broadband), which aims to cover 5 million premises across 37 UK cities and towns by the end of 2024 (here), has so far reached 25,000 premises.

Bristol and Nottingham have come top in a new table of the best ten UK cities for house share investments, which was conducted by broadband ISP Glide (formerly CableCom). This examined various factors such as local connectivity, house share opportunities, rental cost, job prospects, amenities and affordability.

The latest online survey of 2,110 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 65.9% of UK respondents think spending up to £5bn of taxpayers money to ensure nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2033 is a better bet than putting the same money toward public services. But most people expect a long wait.
