Faster broadband speeds could be on their way to neglected parts of Finderne in Moray (Scotland) after the local Finderne Development Trust (FDT), which is set to receive £138,000 per year from the developers of the Logie Wind Farm (Hill of Glaschyle Renewables LLP), confirmed a tentative proposal.

The Scottish Government has today completed the establishment of a new Infrastructure Commission for Scotland (ICS), which aims to develop a 30 year strategy in order to advise on improvements across key infrastructure areas such as transport, energy, water, broadband (internet) and telecoms.

New research from Rural England CIC, which found that mobile calls cannot be made inside 33% of rural buildings on any network (vs 3% in urban premises), has warned that people living in UK rural areas are being “cut off from building businesses” and accessing digital services due to “inadequate” connectivity.

A number of former Supanet (Supatel / TimeTalk) customers have been in contact to complain that the ISP has recently started chasing them for alleged unpaid bills, some of which include vague demands for up to nearly £800. In most cases those being targeted left the broadband provider 4-6 years ago.

After two years of silence the British Phonographic Industry‘s (BPI) Director of Public Affairs, Ian Moss, has finally revealed that broadband ISPs in the UK have sent around 1 million internet piracy warning emails (“subscriber alerts“) to those they suspect of taking part in copyright infringement.

The latest survey of 27,000 UK train passengers from Transport Focus (TF) has revealed that just 33% of commuters are satisfied with the reliability of their on-board internet connection (up from 30% last year) and 36% were satisfied with the availability of WiFi. Heathrow Express came top with 74% satisfied.

The annual uSwitch.com Awards 2019 event took place last night, which saw various wins for broadband ISPs Vodafone, Virgin Media, Plusnet and TalkTalk. Meanwhile Sky (Sky Broadband) scooped several categories for their Mobile service and sibling NOW TV scooped the best TV provider gong.

The Colchester Borough Council in Essex has today announced that they’ve secured a public investment boost of £3.45m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which will enable the market town to expand their existing “ultrafast broadband” network.

Next week’s meeting of the Executive Board for Leeds City Council in Yorkshire looks set to approve a procurement process for finding a partner to build and deliver a new “full fibre” network, which will aim to deliver Gigabit broadband speeds to public sector sites across the district. Homes and businesses may also benefit.

The Confederation of British Industry has warned that Brexit is “sucking the oxygen out of priorities” like deploying “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and 5G. Budget ISP TalkTalk has claimed that they will tomorrow launch “Britain’s lowest fixed price fibre” unlimited broadband and phone service, which will reduce their FTTC (VDSL2) based “Faster Fibre” (36Mbps average speed) package to just £19.95 a month (currently on offer at £22.95) on an 18 month contract term.

Rural UK full fibre ISP TrueSpeed appears to be in the process of extending their Gigabit broadband capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to the large village of Peasedown St John in Somerset, which is currently home to a population of around 6,500 and would mark one of their biggest areas to date.

A developer of the new Visible Light Communication (VLC) based networking technologies, pureLiFi, has announced that they’re about to demonstrate the first “consumer ready” Gigabit speed Light Fidelity (LiFi) kit. The new technology has also been miniaturised so that it can fit inside of a Smartphone.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has today officially unveiled their plan to build, operate and own a 114km Dark Fibre spine network across 10 towns in Suffolk, which is being supported by UK business ISP partner MLL Telecom and an award of £5.9m from the Gov’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) project.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has this morning announced the trial of a new 8Gbps+ (8000Mbps+) home broadband service via their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based network, which is a small scale test that will run for six months and take place with 50 homes in the large Cambridgeshire village of Papworth.
