The Government has today set out its first ever Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services, which requires Ofcom to reflect in their work the need to build “world-class digital infrastructure“, look at mobile roaming in rural areas and tackle the so-called “loyalty penalty” etc.

A new estimate has suggested that Open Fibre Networks (OFN – formerly IFNL), which deploys Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks to new build home developments, has grown their network coverage to reach a little over 40,000 premises across the United Kingdom.

The official registry for .UK domain names, Nominet, has launched a new channel availability tool called WaveDB Explore, which enables wireless broadband ISPs that are in the early stages of planning a deployment using TV White Space (TVWS) technology to identify where it will have the most impact.

Telecoms operator Openreach (BT) has today begun trials of a “new” civil engineering technique called “Micro Ducting“, which in some areas could be used to speed up the roll-out of their new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology to UK homes and businesses.

A consortium of organisations in Worcestershire (England) have today switched-on Britain’s first factory trial of future 5G mobile technology, which is being funded by a grant of £4.8m from the UK government and will examine how the technology can help “smart factories” to become more productive.

Cityfibre has appointed infrastructure firm Amey to build their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the Scottish city of Edinburgh (UK ISP Vodafone will supply to consumers), which is expected to cost a little over £100 million and be largely complete by around the end of 2021.

Fixed wireless UK ISP Quickline (Bigblu) has extended their superfast broadband network to cover thousands of additional premises in the North Yorkshire town of Selby, which was only made possible after the central Selby Abbey church allowed the provider to install a mast on top of their building.

The latest KPMG report into the readiness of countries for the adoption of driverless cars (autonomous vehicles) has seen the United Kingdom fall two places to be ranked 7th overall, which is just behind Sweden and Finland. Apparently we’re being hampered by poor infrastructure, particularly 4G mobile coverage and road quality.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today teamed up with Plume to offer their existing broadband customers “exclusive” access to a new “cloud-coordinated” WiFi system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise your home wireless network, which it claims could improve the signal’s coverage, stability and speed.

The Association of South Essex Local Authorities (ASELA), which consists of Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Essex County, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, has secured an investment of £4.5m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund to help build a new Gigabit broadband network.

A new study from biz broadband ISP Beaming has claimed that businesses in the UK were “attacked online” some 281,094 times each by cyber criminals during 2018 (up 23% year-on-year) via 1.3 million unique IP addresses. Most of those attempts originated from China, Brazil and Russia.

The Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh Western, Alex Cole-Hamilton, has called for more co-ordination between “full fibre” broadband ISPs in the city because “residents … are at the end of their tether” due to repetitive roadworks being used to build the same type of optical fibre network several times over.
