Ofcom to Share 8GHz and 26GHz Spectrum for Wireless Data and 5G

Ofcom has confirmed that they’re “planning” to make more spectrum available for “shared use” with existing services in the 8GHz and 26GHz radio spectrum bands, which is primarily intended to focus upon supporting high capacity fixed wireless broadband links and indoor 5G applications. The 1.4GHz band is also being freed.

ISP Trooli Secures Nearly £27m for UK Full Fibre Broadband Rollout

Alternative full fibre UK ISP Trooli has today secured around £26.6 million (€30m) of funding from European investors, which they say will help them to start building a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 500,000 premises across the South East of England within 5 years.

Spare a Thought for the Falkland Islands and Terrible Broadband

We often report in gripes with rural broadband connectivity from across the United Kingdom but spare a thought for the 3,400 people living on the largely self-governing and self-sufficient Falkland Islands, where all of the fixed line services and mobile networks are still supplied by a limited Satellite data link.

Lowestoft Council Aim to Extend Full Fibre Broadband to Local Homes

The East Suffolk Council in England has agreed to explore a proposed extension of Cityfibre and UK ISP MLL Telecom’s on-going rollout of a new “full fibre” network across the town of Lowestoft, which would enable the network to bring “ultrafast broadband” speeds of 1000Mbps+ to local homes and smaller businesses.

ISP Zen Internet Extend Automatic Compensation System to Partners

Rochdale-based UK broadband provider Zen Internet has announced that Ofcom’s consumer focused automatic compensation scheme is being extended to its channel partners and wholesale customers. As a result customers of those partners will also be able to benefit, even if the partner ISP itself has not signed-up to the regulator’s code.

Rural ISP Gigaclear Ends 2018 with 93,000 Full Fibre UK Premises

Rural ISP Gigaclear, which has been struggling to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to some of England’s most challenging communities, has posted its results to the end of 2018 and revealed that they now cover 93,000 premises (up 58% over 2017) and have 19,000 live customers (up 30%).

Openreach Discount UK Dark Fibre Alternative – Adds 7 Yr Contract

Openreach (BT) has discounted the pricing for their multi-Gigabit virtual (grey) dark fibre style solution (OSA Filter Connect / FSP3000) on 5 year contract terms and introduced a longer 7 year term in order to “better meet the needs of infrastructure providers,” which tend to plan their networks over a longer period of time.

BT Pick Juniper to Support Cloud-Driven 5G Mobile and Unified Network

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has announced that their new 5G based UK mobile broadband network will be underpinned by a cloud-driven platform from Juniper Networks. As a result the operator hopes to enable a more flexible, virtualised and unified network infrastructure that can deliver to various different requirements.

KCOM Drops Sale to USS in Favour of £563m Bid from Macquarie

In a surprise 11th hour twist the incumbent telecoms and broadband ISP for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has rejected a £504m cash offer for its business from a subsidiary of pension fund Universities Superannuation Scheme Ltd (USS) and gone with a £563m takeover bid from Macquarie Infrastructure (MIRA).

Code of Practice to Boost Fibre Broadband Street Works in Scotland

The Scottish Government has officially implemented a new Code of Practice in Scotland, which appears to create a uniform technical standard for “narrow trenching” method of civil engineering (i.e. trenches less than 300mm in width) that could help to speed up the rollout of fibre broadband ISP networks across the country.

New UK Consumer Advocate to Tackle Unfair Broadband Practices UPDATE2

The Government has revealed that they will soon legislate to create a new independent “consumer advocate,” which will be given the task of tackling “unfair” practices within the UK telecoms market (broadband ISPs and mobile operators). On top of that they will also provide “direct support” to consumers.

Oomph as Virgin Media UK Kills VIVID Ultrafast Broadband Brand UPDATE

A small development this morning as cable ISP Virgin Media has decided to replace the “VIVID” branding on their ultrafast broadband packages. Instead future packages will adopt the letter ‘M’ (assumed to denote Megabits) and their top tier 516Mbps triple-play bundle will be renamed from “V.VIP” to “Ultimate Oomph.”
