Mobile operator EE has announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which started to rollout across London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester in May 2019 (here), has now been switched-on in even more of the UK’s “busiest transport hubs and city centre destinations.”

The recent cancellation of UK ISP Gigaclear’s “full fibre” (FTTP) rollout contract under the Connecting Devon and Somerset project (here) has left many rural areas with concerns. As a result the Devon County Council has now moved to assure them that the roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) is continuing.

Last week we reported that alternative network ISP Internetty was preparing to deploy a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps+) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and fixed wireless network to serve UK “rural and semi-urbanised areas.” We now have some details of their rollout plan for Lincolnshire and Staffordshire.

The Milton Keynes Council in Buckinghamshire has reached a new agreement with UK ISP Hyperoptic, which will see their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / B) broadband network being rolled out to cover 4,500 social housing properties in the town. The work is “due to start imminently.”

A new YouGov survey of 4,100 UK people, which was commissioned by UK ISP TalkTalk, has claimed that for 50% of respondents access to “reliable broadband” is more important than their partner and 7 in 10 would even prioritise it over their family pet (this may depend what they mean – in the practical sense – by “prioritise“).

A new uSwitch.com commissioned Opinium survey of 2,010 UK adults (conducted during July 2019), which has been complemented by data from Opensignal, claims that 23 million consumers (45%) still struggle to connect to 4G, while 5G “looks unlikely” to fix this since it will only be available to 28% of the country by the end of 2019.

2nd Oct 2019 (12 Comments)

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Sky TV / Comcast) appears to be offering their Free Sky Evening and Weekend calls add-on at no extra cost (usually +£5 extra per month) for the first 18 months of service, when new customers take out one of their ADSL or FTTC based broadband and phone bundles (with or without TV).

2nd Oct 2019 (13 Comments)

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has, in somewhat of an “industry first,” agreed to help extend Mobile Broadband coverage by sharing some of its “unused” 4G radio spectrum with StrattoOpencell (part of the Digital Colony UK Infrastructure Platform) in order to offer high-speed data in “remote areas without fibre connectivity.”

As many as 350,000 UK homes and businesses across Dorset, Devon and Somerset in England could potentially gain access to a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after new ISP Jurassic Fibre (a play on the local “Jurassic Coast” shoreline) formally launched in Exeter yesterday.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has today unveiled the next quarterly batch of 29 new UK rollout locations (total of 103 so far) for their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which aims to cover 4 million premises (homes and businesses) by March 2021 and then 15 million by around 2025.

As expected Ofcom has today introduced a cap on the wholesale cost of calls to 070 numbers, which can in some cases attract consumer charges of between 45p and £1.10 per minute but will now be aligned with the existing cap set by the regulator for calls to mobile numbers (currently around 0.5p per minute).

The Monmouthshire County Council in Wales has today confirmed that the £155k rollout contract for a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network, which aims to cover around 480 premises in remote rural areas, has been awarded to UK Fixed Wireless Access ISP Broadway Partners (Broadway Broadband).

Alternative full fibre UK broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which is supported by €30m from European investors (here) and aims to cover 500,000 premises across the South East of England by the end of 2024, has grown their network coverage to 10,000 premises and been awarded Path to Collaboration (PTC) by Openreach (BT).

The UK ISP division of the Post Office has today reduced the price of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband and phone packages.
