Customers of mobile network operator Three UK may be pleased to know that they will now be able to access the NHS’s new video consultation service (provided by Attend Anywhere) and without incurring any excess mobile broadband data charges, which have just been zero rated.

A new report from professional services firm PwC has examined the likely impact of the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis on fixed broadband and 5G mobile services and deployments in the United Kingdom, which predicts a turbulent time for telecoms with costly delays to new infrastructure but also some opportunities.

In an unsurprising development Ofcom has today published a revision of their proposed annual work plan for 2020/21, which has naturally resulted in various delays to their broadband (e.g. full fibre competition), mobile (e.g. 5G auctions) and related regulation work due to the on-going COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis.

Fibre optic UK network builder Nextgenaccess, which is supported by an investment of £22m from the UK National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF) to help spread its 10Gbps broadband to businesses, has today confirmed the completion of their new 67km high capacity carrier-neutral fibre network between Bristol and Wales.

The Leader of Oldham Council, Sean Fielding, yesterday told watchers of the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s (Andy Burnham) weekly press conference on the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic that the UK Government’s aim of making “gigabit broadband” available to every home by 2025 “should be brought forward to 2023.” Ok.. how?

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has done a short study of internet use during the COVID-19 crisis, which highlights the impact on internet exchange points in several countries (inc. UK). Overall traffic jumped by as much as 60% but broadband ISPs successfully maintained their services.

A couple of years ago we published a ‘Summary of FTTP Rollout Plans‘ and since then many more alternative network (altnet) ISPs have entered the UK market. As such we felt as it might be useful to produce a more comprehensive update on current progress and providers for 2020 and beyond (we’ll try to keep this up-to-date).
