UK ISP Hyperoptic, which builds 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large residential (MDU) and office buildings, has reached a new agreement with housing association Citizen that will see their service being deployed to cover some 5,000 additional properties in the Midlands.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that the former CEO of rival operator EE UK (BT), Olaf Swantee, is to be appointed to their board as a non-executive director. Mr Swantee will also become a member of the company’s Audit & Risk Committee.

Cable broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has announced that they will hire more than 400 new employees in graduate, intern and apprenticeship roles during 2021, which is said to mark a 163% increase from 2020.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband may be pleased to learn that the provider is now deploying a new firmware (software) update for their latest SR203 and SR204 Sky Hub wireless routers, which the provider says should finally fix two of last year’s biggest bugs with VoIP timing and DHCP networking.

London broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is currently rolling out a new 3Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover a good chunk of the UK’s capital city, has launched a new “Refer a Friend” scheme (i.e. a £50 Amazon voucher for both new and existing customers when referred to join the provider).

Last year saw Openreach (BT) select ADTRAN’s Software-Defined (SD) Fibre Access Platform to help support the rollout of their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (here), making them the operator’s 3rd strategic supplier. Today the first live subscriber has been connected via this platform.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) has published the results from their annual (2020) survey of 430 members, which found that just 20% of farmers had access to fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 17% last year) and 11% have no indoor mobile signal at all (better than the 15% recorded last year).

Cityfibre has announced that the first homes have now connected to their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the city of Inverness (Scotland), which began its £20m rollout last June 2020 and has so far completed in the Culloden, Balloch and Smithton areas of the city.

A new study commissioned by O2 UK has predicted that the first phase of the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with Vodafone and Three UK, which will see all three mobile operators working to build and share 222 new 4G (mobile broadband) masts (here), could increase the turnover for rural businesses by £187.7m per annum.

As expected BT and EE have confirmed that their annual price increase for this year will be 4.5% (effective from 31st March 2021), which reflects their new policy (here) of raising prices by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation – as published in January 2021 (0.6%) – plus an additional 3.9%.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve started to deploy their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and TV network across the coastal Somerset town of Burnham-on-Sea, which is home to a total population of around 20,000 people.

Full fibre ISP Truespeed, which has been deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural areas in South West England, has announced that the city of Bath in Somerset (including surrounding areas) will be the next major area to benefit from the rollout of their new network.

The Government’s Building Digital UK programme has begun a new consultation to help them identify what existing or planned commercial gigabit-capable broadband coverage exists in Cumbria (England), which will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to rollout the service.

A new report from consultancy firm Hatch, which was commissioned by the BT Group, has estimated that the telecoms and broadband giant generated a £24bn contribution to the UK economy (expressed as GVA – Gross Value Added) during the 2019/20 financial year and supports 300,000 full-time jobs (directly and via suppliers etc.).

The Fiber Broadband Association, which represents FTTP networks and suppliers in the USA, has published a new study that claims Elon Musk’s new constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based Starlink broadband satellites will face a “capacity shortfall” by 2028 and over 56% of their “RDOF subscribers” (rural) may not be fully served.

Mobile operator iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) has extended their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with supplier Three UK and as part of that they will also gain access to the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, as well as continued 4G provision.
