Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today informed us that they’ve upgraded 2,876 locations in small towns and hamlets with 4G this year, and increased 4G network capacity in 178,500 postcodes across the UK. The network provider has also rolled out 5G in a total of 53 smaller towns and hamlets, in addition to urban areas.

City-focused broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which has deployed gigabit-capable FTTP/B networks across parts of 43 UK towns and cities (e.g. large residential buildings / MDUs), has today launched a new “low-bandwidth” Proof of Concept (PoC) pilot to help connect “smart home equipment“. But homeowners won’t be able to harness the extra line.

Full fibre ISP Lit Fibre, which is currently deploying a 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to reach 500,000 UK homes by 2026, has named the neighbouring seaside towns of Clacton-on-Sea and Frinton-on-Sea in Essex (England) as the next ones to benefit from their rollout.

Inverness-based broadband ISP BrawBand (HighNet), which currently sells home broadband services over CityFibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in locations such as Inverness, Glasgow and Renfrewshire, has today launched a new pay TV service via Netgem’s platform.

Infracapital-backed alternative network ISP Gigaclear, which recently passed 250,000 premises in rural parts of  England with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, has today secured another huge £190 million investment boost – this time co-financed by the new UK Infrastructure Bank.

Ofcom has released their Connection Nations 2021 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that the coverage of “gigabit-capable” (1Gbps+) broadband ISP networks has jumped from 27% last year to 47% now (13.7 million households). Plus, around half of UK properties are in areas where 5G mobile is available outside.

UK ISP Box Broadband, which is now part of CommunityFibre (here) and has already extended their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 7,000 homes across parts of Surrey and West Sussex (England), has today become the latest provider to bundle in Netgem’s pay TV box and service.

The MP for the small city of Stirling in Scotland, Alyn Smith (SNP), has revealed that CityFibre, which recently completed the rollout of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network for over 20,000 premises in the city, may soon extend this network to reach thousands of premises in nearby villages.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed a new annual work plan for the 2022-23 period. The generalised summary covers everything from improving fairness for consumers to the 2G / 3G mobile switch-off and the migration to VoIP phone services from copper lines, among many other things.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new set of H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities of Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester. Overall, EE tended to deliver the strongest availability and performance, but not for all cities.

Smaller UK alternative network ISPs are increasingly starting to butt heads in some of the same areas. The latest example comes from the small market town of Thame in Oxfordshire (England), where Swish Fibre and Gigaclear have both started to go live with a new full fibre broadband network, within days of each other.

Community ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which are deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural premises in England, has today marked the 10th anniversary of their share launch. The network currently covers around 20,000 premises and has connected 9,000 of those.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced plans to upgrade over 2,000 network sites by June 2024 to help extend 4G coverage (voice and mobile broadband) into rural parts of the UK and to significantly reduce partial not-spots, which forms part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.

Network services provider TNP (The Networking People) has today secured a key 3-year Wide Area Network (WAN) service delivery and support contract, which should ensure that Trafford becomes one of the first boroughs in Greater Manchester to begin “mainstream use” of the area’s new state aid funded full fibre network.

The Welsh Government has issued a Q3 2021 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 24,515 premises (up from 20,490 in Q2) have now gained access to the operator’s 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.
