ISP Gigaclear Offers 200Mbps Broadband for GBP17 Per Month

Rural focused UK ISP Gigaclear, which is working to build their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across remote parts of England, has launched a special offer that gives new customers an unlimited 200Mbps (symmetric) service for just £17 per month for the first 18 months of service (£47 thereafter).

Homes in Cartmel Fell Still Without Broadband After 6 Weeks

Some homes in the remote rural hamlet of Cartel Fell, which sits in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria (England), have been left without access to a working fixed line broadband ISP or phone service for six long weeks. The problems began after Openreach’s local telecoms infrastructure was significantly damaged by Storm Arwen.

The UK Government’s Building Digital UK team has today “soft launched” a new “Rolling National Open Market Review” (RN-OMR) process for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband scheme, which aims to do a better job of identifying areas that will benefit from a commercial rollout so that they can more effectively target public money towards those who will miss out.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has just taken the wraps off yet another update to the still fairly young 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) wireless networking standard which, for marketing purposes, is simply to be called ‘Wi-Fi 6 Release 2‘ and brings with it a couple of key improvements – mostly focused upon boosting upload speeds and power management.

ISP TalkTalk UK Reveals the Top 5 XMas Gaming Gifts by Traffic

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has taken a closer look at the internet traffic from over 1 million of their customers on Christmas Day and managed to identify the top five video gaming console gifts. The data reveals that Nintendo’s Switch console was by far the most popular gaming gift for 2021, with 22,995 new devices being connected on the big day.

ISP KCOM Grows UK Broadband Customer Base to 139,700

KCOM, which recently extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England (here), have published their annual accounts and revealed that their total broadband customer base has grown to 139,700 (most are now on fibre, having migrated from copper).

Vodafone UK and EE Delay Reintroduction of EU Roaming Charges

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE (BT) have moved to mildly delay the planned reintroduction of EU roaming charges, which will eventually see most customers being charged £2 per day to use their UK allowances (calls, texts and data / mobile broadband) across related countries. Previously, you could do this at no extra cost.

GBP20m Boost Fuels Lothian Broadband’s FTTP Rollout in Scotland

ISP Lothian Broadband, which last year proposed to extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 50,000 premises across rural parts of East and Mid Lothian, has secured a major funding boost of £20m from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and their rollout target has been raised to 70,000 premises.

Criminals Attack Openreach’s Network in Witchford.. AGAIN

Last August we reported that a subsidiary of French provider Axione, Axione Fibre (Axione UK), planned to build a new gigabit speed open-access wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network for ISPs to harness in the UK (here), which was backed by £300m (equity) of initial funding. ISPs and Content Providers Respond to Ofcom’s UK Net Neutrality Review

Ofcom has published some of the first responses from UK broadband ISPs and internet content providers to their new review of Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or other online services by ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, vested interests split the pack.

2021 H2 Sees UK Coverage of Gigabit Broadband Hit 65.3 Percent

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 30.23% of premises (up from 24.33% in H1 2021), while 65.27% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 41.72%) and 67.63% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 66.9%).

Former BT Chairman Jan du Plessis Knighted in 2022 New Year Honours

The UK Government has published the 2022 New Year Honours List, which sees the former Executive Chairman of BT Group, Jan du Plessis, scooping a knighthood for “services to Telecommunications and Business.” Sadly, there were no other honours for members of the wider broadband ISP and UK telecoms community.
