Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today donated £2m to support the Good Things Foundation’s initiatives, which was setup in 2021 to help “disadvantaged people” across the UK get online and gain the digital skills they need. The move makes VMO2 a strategic partner for the group.

Some 11 homes along Heggatt Street in a rural Norfolk (England) community, outside Horstead, have been left without broadband access since 30th July, which began after unspecified damage was caused to Openreach’s (BT) network in the area. Some residents have been forced to drive out of the area just to find adequate connectivity.

BT has launched a High Court case against Virgin Media (VMO2), which it accuses of having migrated customers away from their EE based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform (Virgin Mobile) before an agreement had been concluded. The broadband ISP and mobile giant is reportedly seeking £24.6m in compensation.

Digital infrastructure operator CityFibre has restarted their deployments of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across Blackpool and Preston in Lancashire (England), which comes after the company ended their local relationship with civil engineering partner Telent in July.

The Government’s move in May 2022 to conduct a “full national security assessment” of last year’s decision by Patrick Drahi’s (French billionaire) Altice UK, which increased its stake in UK broadband and telecoms giant BT from 12.1% to 18% (here), will result in “no further action” being taken by the Secretary of State.

ISP Giganet, which offers gigabit broadband connectivity to homes and businesses via several platforms (Openreach, CityFibre and its own FTTP network), has signed a new agreement with Dark Fibre operator Neos Networks to secure backhaul and data centre connectivity for their full fibre rollout in the South of England.

The Hellesdon Parish Council, which is a village and suburb of Norwich in Norfolk (England), has fined CityFibre an unspecified amount after a local councillor complained that their efforts to rollout a new gigabit-broadband (FTTP) ISP network in the area was “shoddy” and had caused “a lot of issues“.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has published a Prior Information Notice (PIN) for their Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy (GIS) programme, which is valued at £800m+ and reflects the part of their £5bn Project Gigabit scheme that aims to help gap-fund the rollout of gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks into rural areas.

The Scottish Government has unveiled an extension of their existing £600m Reaching 100% (R100) contract with BT (Openreach), which will see a further £36m being invested to cover an additional 2,637 rural properties with a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. But completion is now 2028!

A long-running investigation by the UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today concluded that Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) broke consumer protection rules by failing to send end-of-contract notifications to their satellite based Pay TV customers.

The Good Law Project (GLP) has filed judicial review proceedings against the East of England Broadband Network (E2BN) for their alleged decision to “unlawfully award” a £70bn ‘Everything Net Zero‘ Framework Agreement to the Place Group, which they claim is a micro “company with scant emissions reduction expertise“.

Broadband ISP Trooli has announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which aims to reach at least 1 million UK premises by the end of 2024, has now extended to cover a total of 275,000 premises (up from 220k in May 2022) – nearly triple the coverage they had a year ago. They’re also entering Derbyshire.
