The seemingly endless campaign of copper cable thefts by increasingly brazen criminals has continued. The latest incident is one of the biggest so far, knocking out broadband and phone services for around 8,000 homes and businesses on Openreach’s (BT) UK network across Maidstone, Sutton Valance and Staplehurs in Kent.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has, over the past couple of weeks, begun to issue a new firmware update (v4.41) for their Virgin TV 360 service (platform), which introduces a number of cosmetic “improvements” to the Horizon software based User Interface (UI) and also some functional changes.

Customers of both EE’s and BT’s mobile UK service will be able to enjoy it a bit more on Sunday this weekend after the operators announced that they were zero-rating data (mobile broadband) across their network this Sunday. The parents of Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and O2 (Telefonica), supported by InfraVia Capital Partners, have today announced the creation of a new Joint Venture (JV) to build an XGS-PON based and wholesale focused Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network that will cover “up to” 7 million additional UK homes.

Mobile operator Three UK has begun to notify customers that their indoor 3G femtocell based signal booster device and service (‘Home Signal‘), which harnesses an existing fixed line broadband ISP connection to create its own indoor 3G mobile signal over a specific band, is to be “retired” on 5th September 2022.

Up to 38,000 workers at national broadband and communications giant BT (including Openreach) are today beginning day one of their two-day national strike over pay (the first one since 1987), with the second due to take place on Monday next week. So far, BT has shown no sign of giving in to the pressure.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve reached the halfway point of their commitment to connect 1 million people, specifically those who are “experiencing digital exclusion“, by the end of 2022. Some 500,000 free mobile data (broadband) and calling SIMs have now been donated to the public.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their joint Q2 2022 results, which saw fixed broadband reach 5,612,000 customers (up by 16,000 in Q2 2022 vs -1K in Q1) and their FTTP coverage reach another 114,000 premises. The fixed line network now covers 15.9m premises (54% of UK).

The BT Group has published their Q1 2022/23 results to June 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 7.957 million premises (up by a record of 763K in the quarter vs 752K last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G network now reaches 55% of the UK population.

Network builders and broadband ISPs in the UK have confirmed that they’re also being affected by a shortage in optical fibre cables, which has caused significant delays to lead times on deliveries and pushed up prices of such cables by as much as 70% since March 2021. But contrary to some reports, the cable cost is not the main issue.
