Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today announced that, as part of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project to help boost 4G (mobile broadband) coverage across rural parts of the UK, they’ve begun improving their service on the remote Island of Islay (Scotland) by carrying a new mast to the location under a helicopter.

Network builder and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across London, are celebrating the re-announcement that more than 1 million homes can connect to their network by giving Londoners the chance to win a free 12-month period 1Gbps fibre.

Mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on EE’s platform, has this afternoon revealed that the reason for their recent UK service (i.e. calls and texts not working for some customers) and support problems (here) is because the network has “been the victim of a cyber attack“.

A new report has revealed that the prototype BlueWalker 3 satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which was launched by AST SpaceMobile to provide 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage to regular handsets on the ground, is so big that it outshines 99% of the stars visible from a dark location on Earth – that’s a problem.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has revealed that, following its recent demerger news (here), the group has finally sold their business division (TT Business Direct) to its own shareholders for £95 million – after seemingly being unable to turn earlier interest from Sky and Daisy Group into a tangible deal.

The Ashford Borough Council (ABC) in Kent, England, has published a review of the local area’s progress on improving broadband and have identified, perhaps unsurprisingly, that “more needs to be done” to ensure that all local residents and businesses benefit from access to “fast and reliable internet connections“.

The Council for the London Borough of Havering has this week announced that they are “seeking expressions of interest from broadband suppliers” to help extend the benefits of gigabit-capable connectivity (FTTP) to over 4,900 council-owned flats in the area, which are currently only served by “old copper broadband lines“.

The UK Government has today launched two interesting new consultations, including one that is seeking views on a looming review of the legally-binding 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband and another that will help better understand how to improve broadband for “Very Hard to Reach” areas.

The consolidation train has started to pick up speed today after two UK builders of FTTP based broadband ISP networks – FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes) and Digital Infrastructure (BeFibre) – announced their intention to create a single wholesale company and a single wholesale platform, which will be a bigger, more ambitious single entity.

Network access provider CityFibre has updated on the progress of its work to roll-out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Glasgow in Scotland, which started in 2021 and is costing c. £270m. The project is currently still due to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2025.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) Pay TV services may like to know that, from today until 6am on 31st October 2023, they will all be given access to additional premium kids TV channels “at no extra cost“, including Sky Kids, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and Nicktoons.

Some customers of Lyca Mobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on EE’s (BT) national platform (previously O2), have – since Friday – been reporting that they’ve been unable to make any mobile calls or send text (SMS) messages. Most customers also report that they’ve been unable to get through to Lyca’s support.
