A couple of weeks ago ISPreview reported on how mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) had withdrawn their Pay As You Go (PAYG) Data and iPad SIMs (mobile broadband) from sale to new customers (here). But the big change this week is that they’ve now informing existing customers of their plan to close the service by 31st January 2025.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency made a change this week that has re-opened their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) for parts of Derbyshire in England, which means that local homes and businesses in poorly served rural areas can apply for grants worth up to £7,500 to help get a much faster broadband ISP network installed.

Alternative broadband operator Spring Fibre, which began attempting to deploy a new 10Gbps capable wholesale full fibre (FTTP) network for ISPs to use in 2021 – starting in Lincolnshire (here), has been sold by their administrators to Leeds-based Harmony Networks for £1.5m after only having passed 12,000 UK premises (RFS).

The UK telecoms regulator has warned that they are “prepared to take action” against broadband ISPs that have failed to adopt the new One Touch Switching (OTS) process, which went live on 12th Sept 2024 and aims to make it easier and quicker for consumers to change provider. But not every ISP has joined, which is causing some consumers to struggle with switching.

A new report from the Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), which is an industry think-tank for the Government, has summarised how much progress the UK telecoms (broadband, mobile etc.) market has made with respect to sustainability and Net Zero (i.e. the goal of an organisation to remove as many carbon emissions as they produce) – with nearly all of the major operators having set targets.

BT Wholesale, which supplies a number of UK ISPs with broadband services, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re investigating an issue with consumer switching between providers via the One Touch Switching (OTS) process that appears to have been introduced on Monday and is disrupting some ISP switches and internet connections.

Alternative broadband network builders Freedom Fibre and Zzoomm, both of which have been rolling out 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks across different parts of the country, are reportedly holding “detailed discussions” about a possible future merger, which could create a network that covers over 500,000 premises.

Communications provider Clarus Networks has today announced that they’ve teamed up to use Starlink’s (SpaceX) global network of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which will be used to help bring improved internet connectivity to ScotRail’s trains and related commuters across the highlands of Scotland.

A new survey from comparison site Go.Compare, which used data gathered from YouGov and other sources, has claimed that 34% of respondents (equated to 9.5 million households) are paying for broadband speeds “they don’t need“. This is said to be equal to an estimated £53m spent on “unused speeds” each month (or £637m a year).

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2024 study of UK consumer complaints, which names and shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) for being the worst provider by attracting the most complaints about broadband, while EE did the same for landline phone and O2 took most flak mobile. Finally, both EE and Virgin Media were jointly on the naughty step for Pay TV.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has done something rather crafty by creating a “human-like” AI (Artificial Intelligence) ‘Granny’ called Daisy, which is designed to answer calls in real-time from fraudsters and then keep them on the phone and away from customers for as long as possible – wasting them time and money.

Hampshire-based business broadband and cloud provider Onecom, which is backed by LDC and the Ares Management Corporation (here), has caused some concern among their partners after notifying them of an ongoing dispute with their supplier of eve Services (KM Telecom) that threatens to disrupt some services.

The UK government (DSIT) has this morning announced that seven more 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have gone live across North, South West and West Wales as part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. The work will benefit parts of Bontddu, Llanelltyd, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Penmaenpool, Tabor, Snowdonia National Park and Bontgoch.

Broadband network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with retail ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has announced that they’ve extended their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network to cover 9,000 additional homes in the Essex (England) town of Witham.

A new UK mobile operator called Ymobile (Ycorp) has officially launched today and claims to be the United Kingdom’s “first data-led, eSIM MVNO“, all while claiming to offer users a “simpler, more streamlined and environmentally friendly” alternative to traditional mobile networks.

Rural network builder and ISP Fusion Fibre Group (formerly FACTCO), which has built a number of its own FTTP broadband networks for various communities, has today moved to expand their availability across the UK by signing a new wholesale agreement with PlatformX Communications. PXC was formerly known as TalkTalk Wholesale before the demerger (here).

Debt-troubled UK broadband ISP TalkTalk recently published their group accounts for the year to 29th February 2024, which reveals that their on-net customer base (fibre FTTP/C and broadband) fell again to 3.6 million (down from 3.94m in 2023). But their Ethernet (leased lines etc.) base grew to 75,000 (up from 69,400).
