Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today begun to inform UK broadband and phone providers about a new pilot called Emergency Voice Access (EVAc), which is intended to be a basic voice-only fallback service for copper lines (WLR) that fail to be migrated in time for the switch-off of analogue phone (PSTN / WLR) services.

The UK broadband, mobile and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has published a new open letter that they sent to UK Communications Providers last week, which called on them to “assess [the] security risks arising from frontier AI [Artificial Intelligence] models and take appropriate mitigating action“.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is responsible for examining the value for money of UK Government projects, programmes and service delivery, has announced the launch of a new inquiry that will examine the effectiveness of current regulation when applied to the water, energy and broadband internet connectivity sectors.

Aircraft manufacturer Britten-Norman has announced that their efforts with World Mobile Stratospheric to develop advanced airborne 5G mobile connectivity system, which could be used to help extend mobile broadband coverage into remote rural areas or to provide coverage during disasters, has progressed beyond R&D and to the installation phase.

Nearly two years have now passed since Openreach launched their current fastest consumer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tiers – 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps – into the UK market (here) and yet BT’s own wholesale division still has yet to offer the same speeds to ISPs. But ISPreview understand that this may change later in 2026.
