The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT / DCMS) has today proposed “tougher fines and prison sentences” for those who damage subsea infrastructure essential for UK broadband access and trade, with consultation planned to take place later this year.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed that one million people have now used their upgraded Map Your Mobile Postcode Checker since it launched a year ago (here). The service was enhanced to better match people’s real-world experiences of 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) performance and signal strength across EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2.

UK ISP Plusnet has updated the discounts on their home broadband plans for new customers, which for example has slashed the monthly price of their top 900Mbps (gigabit) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package to just £28.99 per month on a 24-month term. Some packages also now include reward cards (pre-paid Mastercards) worth up to £150.

A new legal action portal called Starlink Sucks has been launched by Nik Fox, a UK broadcast technology expert, which accuses the popular satellite broadband provider of hitting consumers with a “predatory … hardware trap” — an allegedly “calculated corporate strategy” where subscribers are said to have been locked into “expensive, non-transferable physical equipment” before their service plans are stripped away.

Gaerwen-based virtual mobile operator Clear Mobitel has revealed that they aspire to deploy a new 5G Standalone (5GSA / 5G+) based radio access network, including fibre optic and Microwave backhaul, which will be used to deliver a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network to homes, businesses and at wholesale for UK ISPs. Mobile operator Vodafone UK (VodafoneThree) and network supplier Ericsson today claim to have completed a “world-first network upgrade” by becoming the first mobile operator to successfully unify core and radio network sharing over a multi-vendor 4G and 5G network – helping to unlock faster mobile broadband speeds for around 71% of UK people.

Digital banking company Monzo has today followed rival Revolut by soft launching their own set of eSIM based mobile plans that are “simple, flexible and rewards staying, not switching“, which will be powered by O2’s (Virgin Media) national 4G and 5G mobile data (broadband) network. The service will also offer “seamless international roaming capabilities” through 1GLOBAL.

Networking kit manufacturer TP-Link, which develops a lot of broadband routers, WiFi extenders and smart home devices, has today preview their forthcoming Archer 8 router platform – one of the first in the world to support the next Wi-Fi 8 standard (this hasn’t yet been ratified). The move comes a day after Broadcom unveiled their first Wi-Fi 8 chipsets.

Officials within the UK Government have reportedly sent their strongest signal yet that they’d oppose any move by the boss of the India-based Bharti group, Sunil Bharti Mittal, to take control of UK broadband and telecoms giant BT by increasing his stake above the current level of 24.95%.

A sizeable group of Linux-powered broadband ISP routers, widely used both around the world and across the United Kingdom, will need firmware updates after a string of six new security vulnerabilities were recently discovered in the open-source networking tool Dnsmasq. But most of them would require local network access to fully exploit.

Alternative network ISP Fibrus, which is deploying their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure across parts of Cumbria in England and Northern Ireland, has announced having just surpassed 150,000 customers (up from 142,000 last month). The provider currently covers over 465,000 UK homes with their network (more than 330,000 of those are in N.Ireland).

Network operator Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that they recently started building their full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across 11 pre-planned UK locations and have, separately, also reached a new access agreement with the Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) in Scotland to cover 2,000 flats and apartments.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has this morning announced that their internet security feature – Secure Net Home, and smart router technology, Who’s Home, which were previously only available on their premium Pro 3 fixed broadband packages, has been extended to 900,000 customers on their standard broadband packages too.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that their new Direct-to-Device (D2D) based O2 Satellite service (here), which for just £3 extra per month enables normal Smartphones to connect to their mobile network via Starlink’s satellites, will be extended to work on Apple iPhones from tomorrow.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today published the results from a new study they conducted, which examined mobile network (4G, 5G) coverage and mobile broadband performance across part of the River Thames (Putney Pier to Westminster Pier) in London, while travelling onboard an Uber Boat (Thames Clippers). Vodafone came out on top.
