GoFibre network engineers hat

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network provider GoFibre, which is building full fibre (FTTP) broadband across rural parts of Scotland and Northern England, has today announced that the first premises have just gone live under their £105m (public subsidy) Project Gigabit contract to cover 63,000 hard-to-reach premises in North East Scotland (100,000 if you include their commercial roll-out).

Google and Apple recently began bringing cross-platform end-to-end encryption to Rich Communication Services (RCS), which is a data-only messaging service that’s intended to replace traditional SMS text messaging (you need a mobile internet / broadband connection for it to work). But it’s not yet fully available from all UK mobile operators.

National network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’ve deployed their 7,000th Electric Vehicle (EV) on UK roads to support their broadband and phone engineers, which is up from around 6,000 in December 2025. Most of the operator’s EVs come from brands such as Ford, Stellantis (e.g. Vauxhall), Toyota, and Renault.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has published new documents that give us our first look at the E1 router (L1LA10) that Amazon Leo (Project Kuiper) intends to ship alongside its service, which reflects a huge constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) – available to the UK and globally.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMB) looks as if it might soon catch up with their consumer division. ISPreview has spotted that the provider are preparing to introduce three new packages for small business customers, which will all offer symmetric speeds via their latest XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Mobile and broadband provider Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has today confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve finally deployed and activated a new mobile mast to help fix the problems in the Pembrokeshire (Wales) seaside town of Tenby (here). Locals have been suffering from months of poor signal since the old mast suddenly vanished at the start of 2026.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today announced a new multi-year partnership with Accenture, which will see them deploy new service management orientated AI capabilities to harness network intelligence, customer data and insight platforms to improve its support for businesses and the public sector.

The UK Government is expected to publish a new Green Paper in the next few weeks, which will set out their proposed plan for switching off terrestrial TV signals as part of a move toward internet-based streaming platforms. But the chosen date will be contingent upon universal coverage of affordable “superfast broadband” and other supporting requirements.

Shropshire-based independent ISP Aquiss has this morning announced some price reductions across their range of Business Full Fibre packages on Netomnia’s national network, which offers speeds of up to 7Gbps (average) and is available to over 125,000 business premises across the UK. For example, their top 7Gbps tier has been cut from £120 +vat per month to £80.

Over a week has passed since BT announced the revival of their BT Mobile brand for basic 30 day rolling SIM Only contracts with capped data allowances (here), which will only be available to BT’s Consumer broadband customers (unlimited data and handset bundles remain EE’s domain). But ISPreview has now managed to uncover more details of the provider’s mobile plans.

The often frequently changeable pricing and package structure of SpaceX’s Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband in the UK and around the globe via a massive constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has changed again and not for the better. Most UK plans will soon go up by £5 extra per month and some features have doubled in price.

Credible sources have informed ISPreview that UK ISP BT (EE) are preparing to migrate their remaining base of over 20,000 customers on Openreach’s hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” network to the equivalent digital SOGEA (formerly SOGFAST) platform. The change is due to the looming closure of the old analogue phone network (PSTN / WLR).

A new report has claimed that the founder and chairman of managed communications provider Giacom, Matthew Riley, is allegedly partnering with private equity group Oakley Capital to back a £1bn takeover of business IT and ISP Gamma Communications. Once completed the provider might then be broken up, with its UK telecoms arm going to Giacom.

Broadband and mobile giant Vodafone (Group) has announced that, subject to shareholder approval, Olaf Koch will be appointed as a Non-Executive Director (NED). At the same time Maria Amparo Moraleda Martinez, an existing NED, will not seek re-election at the AGM and will therefore retire as a Board member (inc. Chair of the Remuneration and ESG Committees).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has confirmed new closure dates for the two legacy exchanges in Ballyclare (9,500 premises in N.Ireland) and Kenton Road (9,500 premises in London), which were originally due to be switched off on 30th November 2025. The new Network Cease Date for both has now been set back almost a year to 2nd of November 2026.

Internet provider Olilo has today announced the introduction of an L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol) service from £10 per month inc. VAT, which is a service that people or businesses can use to establish a secure (virtual) “tunnel” to transmit data packets between two points across a public network.
