Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave has deployed their 4G Distributed Antenna System (DAS) across the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which can be used by any mobile network operator (EE, O2, or Vodafone / Three UK) to help staff, patients and visitors connect to a good mobile (mobile broadband) signal.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today signed a contract with Scottish Water to help the organisation deliver a fully integrated network and security service. The deal forms part of Scottish Water’s wider £130 million investment into its networks.

French benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results of a new study, which found that the United Kingdom ranks 2nd in Europe for adoption of the latest 5G Standalone (5G+) mobile broadband network technology. The UK was only beaten by Austria, which saw slightly more mobile connection tests take place via 5G+ networks.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve switched on their 500th “Giga Site” (located in North Elgin, Scotland), which reflects mobile sites that adopt the operator’s most advanced 5G technologies (e.g. 5G+, dual-band Massive MIMO etc.) to improve network coverage, mobile broadband speeds and capacity for customers.

Internet speed testing organisation SpeedOf.Me has published their H1 2026 Data report for the first half of the year, which among other things reveals that the United Kingdom ranked a respectable 14th out of 119 countries with an average (median) download speed of 82.8Mbps. Data for upload speeds and latency is also included.

Wythenshawe-based broadband provider Neatley, which in 2023 was partly acquired by the Telecom Acquisitions Group via Home Telecom (here), has just completed adoption of the Catena OSS / BSS platform, Audra Safe customer router and nationwide wholesale connectivity from Audra Solutions.

Network engineer Oleg Kutkov has leaked that Starlink’s next-gen Mini 2 dish terminal, which has yet to be officially introduced, has “finally entered production” and is confirmed to have a built-in “4S battery“, which usually refers to a Lithium Polymer (LiPo) or Li-ion pack with four individual cells wired in series. Further details have also been leaked.

Broadband ISP BT (EE) has published new data to show how much of an impact Saturday’s night’s FIFA World Cup 2026 football match between England and France had on the internet provider’s national network, which we’re told saw peak BBC iPlayer traffic extend 75% higher than the peak recorded during the equivalent 10pm–midnight period in an average week.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has today released their July 2026 update on the delivery progress of contracts awarded under the £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 287,510 contracted premises (up from 271,460 in Jun 2026) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 838,490 (34% complete).

The government’s UK Space Agency has today opened up the third funding round under their 4-year £160m Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) programme, which is offering £42m to develop new satellite technologies and components to help supply “high-speed internet, communications and data services” around the world.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today decided to implement their plan for allowing Low Power Indoor (LPI) Wi-Fi and outdoor mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) networks to “share” access to the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz). The UK will thus become the first country in Europe to adopt this, but mobile networks won’t be able to harness it until after 2030.

Good news if you’re one of Sky Mobile’s most “most loyal customers” as the UK mobile operator has this morning promised to give you “free global roaming” across 120 destinations (this normally costs an extra £2 a day when abroad using Sky’s Roaming Passport Plus). But you’ll need to have been with Sky for quite a few years to benefit.

Broadband, phone and TV provider Virgin Media (O2) has this morning announced that customers of their pay TV service, at least those on their Virgin TV360 and IP-based Stream platforms, can now access four brand new streaming channels “at no extra cost“.

The incoming UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is reportedly planning to abolish the Government’s central Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), which also oversees broadband and mobile connectivity (telecoms) – partly via the Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency. The proposal plan could see DSIT’s functions being spread across other departments.

Alternative broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group, YouFibre), which has already built their UK full fibre (FTTP) network to cover over 3 million premises RFS (inc. 500,000 customers), have confirmed that their deployment across the city of Newport in Wales has so far reached 30,000 local homes and businesses.

The ever-changeable packages and pricing of Starlink’s (SpaceX) satellite-based ultrafast broadband service took yet another twist just before the weekend. The provider suddenly seemed to drop the extra £10 per month charge for hardware rental (dish, router etc.) with new customers, which was somewhat sneakily introduced last month.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re “actively engaged in international efforts to find solutions” to the problem raised by a recent study, which warned that ground-based telescopes might soon become useless if the number of satellites in Earth’s orbit exceeds 100,000 (i.e. those with below naked eye visibility).
