Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published further analysis of the £2bn acquisition of full fibre alternative UK broadband network Netomnia (Substantial Group) by the parents of nexfibre and Virgin Media (O2). The research highlights how much of a bearing a single piece of competition-law math – the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) – may have on the deal being cleared or not.

Managed and IT service provider Flotek Group has announced that they’ve acquired Essex-based ISP Clear Telecom, which has over 23 years’ experience supporting SMEs across the region, for an undisclosed sum. The provider’s services include IT support, hosted VoIP, SIP trunks, Microsoft Teams, business phone systems, mobile, broadband, and leased lines for SMEs.

Mobile network operator Vodafone has revealed how a new trial have seen them add an AI brain and robotic arm to one of their mast sites, which can be used to autonomously analyse where customers need signal coverage the most and then automatically adjust the radio antenna to improve the signal toward that area.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today unveiled the shortlist of finalists for their 2026 annual industry awards event, which sees 70 separate organisations (broadband ISPs, network builders etc.) being nominated across 13 “revised categories“. But a few categories won’t be finalised until a little later.

Broadband-based live TV streaming service Freely, which is backed by the major UK broadcasters and is an evolution – not yet a replacement – for the existing Freeview platform (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat), has reported seeing a “significant increase” in the number of people watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup over broadband.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave has deployed their 4G Distributed Antenna System (DAS) across the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which can be used by any mobile network operator (EE, O2, or Vodafone / Three UK) to help staff, patients and visitors connect to a good mobile (mobile broadband) signal.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today signed a contract with Scottish Water to help the organisation deliver a fully integrated network and security service. The deal forms part of Scottish Water’s wider £130 million investment into its networks.

French benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results of a new study, which found that the United Kingdom ranks 2nd in Europe for adoption of the latest 5G Standalone (5G+) mobile broadband network technology. The UK was only beaten by Austria, which saw slightly more mobile connection tests take place via 5G+ networks.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that they’ve switched on their 500th “Giga Site” (located in North Elgin, Scotland), which reflects mobile sites that adopt the operator’s most advanced 5G technologies (e.g. 5G+, dual-band Massive MIMO etc.) to improve network coverage, mobile broadband speeds and capacity for customers.

Internet speed testing organisation SpeedOf.Me has published their H1 2026 Data report for the first half of the year, which among other things reveals that the United Kingdom ranked a respectable 14th out of 119 countries with an average (median) download speed of 82.8Mbps. Data for upload speeds and latency is also included.

Wythenshawe-based broadband provider Neatley, which in 2023 was partly acquired by the Telecom Acquisitions Group via Home Telecom (here), has just completed adoption of the Catena OSS / BSS platform, Audra Safe customer router and nationwide wholesale connectivity from Audra Solutions.
