Ofcom UK Moots Mobile Broadband in UHF Spectrum Bands IV and V

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has started a new consultation that will look at the long term development options (after 2018) for handling the valuable radio spectrum in Ultra High Frequency (UHF) bands IV and V. One option could be to repurpose them for use by Mobile Broadband services.

UPD BT Select Deddington UK for its First Fibre Only Broadband and Phone Trial

BTOpenreach has today officially selected Deddington (Oxfordshire, UK) as the first rural village to take part in their unique Fibre-Only Exchange (FOX) trial, which will replace the areas existing “copper-based products” with ultrafast fibre optic broadband (e.g. 100Mbps+ FTTP) and phone (Fibre Voice Access) services.

UK White Space Broadband Wireless Trial Speeds Fail to Impress

Early feedback from BT’s trial of ‘White Space‘ (IEEE 802.22) wireless broadband technology on the Isle of Bute suggests that the service, which delivers internet access by making use of the unused radio spectrum that exists between Digital TV channels, still has a lot of problems to overcome, not least in terms of its sporadic performance.

UK ISPs Claim a Perceived Lack of Choice is Hindering Broadband Adoption

Business ISP Fluidata claims that 24 out of the 30 internet providers it interviewed felt that a “perceived lack of choice” and a “lack of awareness” of the broadband options open to businesses and consumers were creating a barrier to adoption, particularly in rural areas.

UPD MS3 Communications Expand Fibre Optic Broadband Network into Hull UK

MS3 Communications, an independent data and telecommunications network, has awarded the £5.5 million contract for deploying the “first 50km” of their fibre optic broadband network around Hull (Yorkshire, UK) to Mid-Wales based company Welch Civils Ltd.

BT Delays FTTC Superfast Broadband Upgrade in Burton UK by 3 Months

BT has warned that some homes and businesses in the joint Staffordshire and Derbyshire town of Burton (Burton-on-Trent) may now have to wait until 30th June 2012 (originally 31st March) before the area is upgraded to support the operators ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps superfast broadband technology (FTTC). Apparently an unspecified technical problem at the local telephone exchange is holding the work up.

Ofcom Delays 1800MHz for 4G Ruling as Three UK Threatens Legal Action

Ofcom has delayed its proposal to allow T-Mobile and Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) to launch the country’s first 4G superfast Mobile Broadband service over their existing 1800MHz (3G) spectrum band. Separately Three UK, in an effort to ensure that they get a fair slice of the much more valuable 800MHz spectrum (covers a wider area for less money), are now mulling legal action.

Alternative UK Superfast Broadband ISPs See Significant Growth

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic reports that alternative UK network operators, such as Rutland Telecom and Call Flow Solutions, have managed to increased their residential customer base by 85% since the middle of 2011. The news suggests that some of the smaller operators are “beginning to find their niche” by helping to reach poorly connected rural areas and individual communities with superfast internet access.

Brocade Calls for UK Superfast Broadband Plan to Refocus on Data Centres

Brocade, a global networking solutions provider, has warned that the current drive to deliver superfast broadband services to 90% of the UK population by 2015 desperately needs to “shift in focus” away from home connectivity and onto data centres.
