BT Openreach Boosts Engineers for UK Superfast Broadband Rollout

BTOpenreach claims to have boosted the total number of permanent full-time engineers involved with deploying its superfast broadband (FTTC / FTTP) ISP services in the UK to over 3,000 after it added an additional 150 recruits.

Internet provider BE Broadband has this morning informed their customers that they’re “not making very good progress on fibre” and will once again have to delay their plans to launch a full superfast broadband (FTTC) service until 2013. The move is also likely to affect parent ISP O2 UK (Telefonica).

Home WiFi Networks Found in 73 Percent of UK Households

New Strategy Analytics research has revealed that the UK and South Korea dominate the world for home wi-fi network penetration. Some 80.3% of households in SK have wifi networks, which falls to 73.3% for the UK. Overall 25% (439 Million) of households worldwide now have a home wifi network and adoption continues to climb.

BT Makes its 80Mbps Superfast FTTC Broadband Upgrade Available to ISPs

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for providing UK internet providers with equal access to BT’s telecoms infrastructure, is this week expected to make its ‘up to’ 80Mbps (download speed) upgrade available to all ISPs offering services via their superfast broadband Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) platform (the 80Mbps trial ends today). FTTC’s maximum upload speed will also rise up to 20Mbps.

comScore Reveals Mobile Broadband and WiFi Internet Use on UK Smartphones

Analyst firm comScore has revealed that 13% of iOS (Apple iPhone) and 43% of Android based Smartphone owners in the UK use only Mobile Broadband connectivity to go online, which rises to 87% and 57% respectively when both mobile and WiFi connectivity are used. Interestingly Three UK is the most popular network for mobile-only (3G) internet access, while Vodafone comes top when mobile and WiFi use is combined.

ABI Research has estimated that the worldwide fixed line broadband market, driven by demand for superfast fibre optic based connections, managed to generate service revenue of £30 Billion ($47.7bn) in Q1-2012 and reached a total of 586.7 Million subscribers. The latest anecdotal monthly consumer broadband ISP speed testing results from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the month of March 2012, reveals that the average UK internet download speed has shot up from 8.210Mbps (Megabits per second) during January 2012 to 10.731Mbps now.

Ofcom UK Proposes to Make Calls to 0800 Numbers Free from all Phones

Ofcom, the communications and media regulator, has today moved to simplify UK call charges by proposing to make all calls, from both fixed lines and mobile phones, to 0800 and 116 telephone numbers completely free. At present calls to 0800 numbers can, somewhat confusingly, still attract charges of up to 21p a minute from mobiles.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today confirmed the much anticipated mid-April 2012 launch of its free wireless internet (wifi) service, which will be available to the ISPs existing SkyBroadband Unlimited, Sky Fibre Unlimited (due to launch next week) and Sky Connect customers from over 10,000 Hotspots across the UK.

BT Wholesale Cuts Broadband ISP Bandwidth Charges for UK Rural Areas

BTWholesale, the wholesale division of national UK telecoms operator BT, has this week informed internet providers about a number of new broadband price changes. The biggest of which is a 13% reduction in the price of its IPstream Connect (i.e. up to 8Mbps ADSL technology) contracted bandwidth for Market 1 (rural) areas.
