A team working for Check Point Software Technologies have warned that the TR-069 (CWMP) remote management protocol, which is commonly enabled in broadband routers supplied by ISPs and helps the provider to keep your device updated with the latest firmware or to perform various other tasks (e.g. diagnostics), is vulnerable to a variety of potential exploits.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has tonight announced the winners of its 16th annual 2014 Internet Industry Awards, which saw Hyperoptic’s urban FTTH service pick-up the prize for ‘Best Superfast Broadband’ and PlusNet secure a win as the ‘Best Consumer Fixed Broadband’ provider. But there were many more categories and awards.

Internet provider PlusNet has cut the cost of its superfast ‘Unlimited Fibre Broadband and Calls’ (FTTC) package in half from £19.99 to just £9.99 a month for the first 6 months of service. Meanwhile there are also plans for another rise in the cost of line rental and a product refresh to simplify their packages.

A new report claims that the United Kingdom’s four largest home broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband and Virgin Media) are expected to imminently agree a controversial new Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme of Internet piracy warning letters with the Motion Picture Association and British Phonographic Industry.

Mobile operator Three UK has, much as we predicted last month (here), today dropped unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering support from its “all-you-can-eat” data based tariffs and replaced it with a 2GB (GigaByte) usage cap. On the upside.. calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers are now free from mobiles too.

Fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has announced that firms on the Kingston Business Park (Kingston Bagpuize) in Oxfordshire now have the ability to order an up to 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Internet service, which is a lot better than BT’s old up to 8Mbps ADSL connectivity.

A new report from the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG), which is a sometimes controversial think-tank for the Government on matters of broadband policy, has warned that Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) across the United Kingdom are failing to unlock the “commercial potential” of faster broadband connectivity.

BTOpenreach, which is responsible for maintaining BT’s national UK network, has said that it’s always “working to improve” its service after at least two ISPs – Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and TalkTalk – both criticised their service quality ahead of Ofcom’s on-going review of the fixed telecoms market.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has launched several new promotions including one that offers their unlimited broadband and free weekend calls bundle at half price (£5) for 12 months (6 months half price on their superfast FTTC package) or FREE if you take the Sky Sports pack. A £100 M&S Voucher is also available on their TV bundle.

A new study from RootMetrics has named EE as the fastest mobile broadband operator in Manchester (England) after it blitzed past rivals, including distant runner-up Three UK, to record an average download speed of 15.2Mbps (Megabits per second) and uploads of 9.4Mbps.

The latest quarterly results from O2 UK (BE Broadband) appear to suggest that the ISPs fixed line home broadband customers have been climbing over themselves to escape the forthcoming migration to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) as subscriber figures fell by a staggering -40,700 in Q1-2013 to total 519,400.

The Open Rights Group, Privacy International and Big Brother Watch have today attacked some of the United Kingdom’s best known ISPs for betraying their customers by engaging “in a conspiracy of silence with the Home Office” over controversial proposals to expand the country’s existing internet snooping law (Communications Data Bill).

YouView YourView, the broadband ISP based video-on-demand and catch-up TV (IPTV) service, have announced that Lord Alan Sugar, whom is perhaps best known as the man who founded Amstrad and says “Your’re fired!” a lot on a certain TV show, has decided to leave his role as Non-Executive Chairman.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has today released its latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q1-2012), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base (includes BE Broadband customers) had continued to decline by -2,500 (net) between Q4-2011 and Q1-2012 to reach a new total of 617,800.
