A Policy and Resources committee meeting of the Dumfries and Galloway Council in Scotland has confirmed that the local authority will commit £12.6 million to help make superfast broadband ISP connectivity available to 85% of local premises by 2015.

The London Borough of Camden in England has today become the first of seventeen councils in the capital city to confirm a free public Wi-Fi (wireless internet) service to streets and open spaces across the borough, though it’s only free for the first 30 minutes of use (daily).

ISP PlusNet has begun offering a series of new half price promotions on their standard (up to 16Mbps) and superfast (up to 80Mbps) unlimited broadband and phone bundle packages, although the ISP has also quietly hiked some of their line rental and call plan prices.

The latest quarterly results from O2 UK (BE Broadband) appear to suggest that the ISPs fixed line home broadband customers have been climbing over themselves to escape the forthcoming migration to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) as subscriber figures fell by a staggering -40,700 in Q1-2013 to total 519,400.

The Durham County Council (DCC) in North East England (UK) has today signed a new state aid supported £24 million deal with BT that will see “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services being rolled out to “around” 94% of local premises by the end of 2016.

The joint public and privately funded £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which originally aimed to deploy BT fibre optic (FTTC etc.) based broadband ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has now expanded its target to cover 95%.

Netflix UK, the unlimited movie and TV video streaming service, has launched a new Netflix ISP Speed Index website that is designed to give consumers “insight into which Internet Service Providers [deliver] the best streaming experience“.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released a new study into online copyright infringement (internet piracy), which estimates that 16% of UK internet users aged 12+ have consumed at least one item of online content illegally between August-October 2012 and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

BTWholesale, the wholesale division of national UK telecoms operator BT, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its up to 20Mbps (ADSL2+) capable 21CN based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) platform will be extended beyond their current targets and into more rural areas to reach over 92% of the country.

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has today released its latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q1-2012), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base (includes BE Broadband customers) had continued to decline by -2,500 (net) between Q4-2011 and Q1-2012 to reach a new total of 617,800.
