Satellite broadband ISP Avanti, along with several other space communications firms, can rest a little easier today after landowner BT agreed a new 999-year lease for the Goonhilly Earth Station, a large telecommunications site located at Goonhilly Downs on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall (England).

The £25m Better Broadband for Oxfordshire project, which aims to extend BT’s superfast broadband access (25Mbps+) to 90% of Oxfordshire in England by the end of 2015, has revealed the next batch of locations to benefit from the upgrade.

Don’t blame the hybrid fibre upgrade. The Managing Director (Service Management) of BTOpenreach, Warren Buckley, has apologise to residents of Binfield Heath in Oxfordshire, which last year raised £60k to help roll-out a superfast broadband (FTTC) service in the area (here), following an up to 6 week long broadband and phone outage.

The £24.6m Connecting Shropshire project in England has revealed a new list of 25 telephone exchange areas that will benefit from an upgrade to BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which should be expanded to reach 93% of local premises by the end of Spring 2016 (excluding the separate Telford & Wrekin).

The state aid supported £9.6m Northernlincs Broadband project has named the first communities to benefit from the roll-out of BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which aims to cover 92% of North and North East Lincolnshire in East England by spring 2015.

Competition concerns with the Broadband Delivery UK project have again been raised after BT’s Programme Manager for the £94m Connecting Devon and Somerset scheme in England, Laurent Boon, rejected a call for the parish of Upottery to receive a “fibre broadband” upgrade, which it said would cost the equivalent of £2,000 per property.

The Glasgow City Council has awarded a “wireless concession” to BT that allows the UK telecoms operator to roll-out a free wireless Internet service across the Scottish city and just in time for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. But it will only be completely free for the first 6 months.

BT appears to have increased the value of their Sainsbury’s Gift Cards with standard broadband packages from £25 to £50 (until 17th February), while those included alongside their superfast broadband BTInfinity packages have jumped from £50 to £100. Most of their packages are currently also being offered at half-price for 3-6 months.

The £48m Onlincolnshire project in the East Midlands (England), which initially aimed to make BT’s superfast broadband (25Mbps+) network available to “at least” 88% of all homes and businesses in the county by April 2016, has won another £2.8m to help cover an extra 5,000 homes and businesses.

Brief Internet and phone outages can be annoying but spare a thought for ten homes in a rural Fife (Scotland) village, near St Michaels Inn, where a BT cable fault has left locals without a working broadband and phone service since 22nd November last year.

The state aid supported £31.75m Superfast Dorset project in southern England has today announced the first areas that can expect to benefit from an upgrade to BT’s fibre optic based (FTTC/P) broadband network, which aims to cover 97% of the county by late 2016 (note: 95% will get superfast speeds of 25Mbps+).

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has confirmed that the operator is already conducting trials of 4K video streaming (Ultra HDTV – 3840 x 2160 pixels) technology for its BT TV and sport content. But you’ll need a good broadband connection to benefit.

The national telecoms operator has rebuffed claims made by business Internet provider Timico, which earlier this week estimated that 10% of companies in the United Kingdom could face the “worst case scenario” of being completely “cut off” from their broadband services as BT withdraws its old 20CN platform.
