Some 70 businesses on Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire can now access superfast broadband of up to 100Mbps, as well as Gigabit capable leased lines, after local ISP WarwickNet took over the management of the campus-wide network during 2013 and gave it a big upgrade.

The city of Liverpool is already well covered by “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable broadband services, but the local authority are now looking to further boost connectivity to “ultrafast” levels (usually 100Mbps+ or Gigabit territory) by renting out their underground cable ducts to private investment.

It’s fair to say that Vodafone’s return to the UK home broadband market has been a quiet one, much like their first failed attempt, and the plans to introduce a TV product alongside have yet to materialise. As such some may see the departure of Cindy Rose (Consumer Director) as a bad sign.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published the final outcome of its Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016), which has proposed changes that among other things would open up access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network, cut leased line (Ethernet) prices and deliver quicker installs.

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre has today won a new 10-year and £3.24 million contract to build a new 50km long Dark Fibre network in Southend-on-Sea (Essex, England), which will provide ultrafast broadband and data services to 120 key public sector sites and local businesses.

The regulator has published an “econometric analysis” of the effect of disruptive firms (e.g. Three UK) on mobile pricing, which among other things suggests that the proposed £10.25bn merger between Three UK and O2 could result in consumer prices going up by between 17.2% and 20.5% on average.

A new report from IHS has said that Cityfibre’s Gigabit fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network will increase its coverage area from “15% of all UK households to 20%” by 2020, which will help to boost NGA Internet connections to 15.5 million. But the figures do require some clarification.

The Institute of Directors, which represents around 35,000 business leaders and directors, has called on the Government to go beyond their current ambition to deliver a Universal Service Obligation of 10Mbps broadband for all by 2020 and take us to 10,000Mbps by 2030.
