Sky (Sky Broadband) has today launched a new UK ISP sibling that is being aimed specifically at small businesses – called ‘Sky Connect‘, although at launch they’ll only be offering packages based off “superfast broadband” Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology from Openreach. But FTTP will follow “later this year“.

Satellite operator Avanti Communications, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of five large communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery, has appointed former OneWeb man Vikas Grover to be its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Last year we reported that smaller full fibre building alternative UK broadband network providers (AltNets) were furious after Openreach imposed a “punitive” new fee on those using Ethernet (e.g. EAD) products to feed their FTTP service to end-users (here). You had to do some digging to find it, but Ofcom has chosen to uphold this.

OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government and aims to deploy a global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast low-latency broadband provision (here), has signed a new agreement to deliver fast in-flight WiFi on aircraft with SatixFy, a British manufacturer of electronic components.

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and TV video streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), will this week be rebranded as just “NOW” (i.e. the “TV” part has been dropped) in order to remove unnecessary detail in favour of “brilliant simplicity … for those who love and live for the best entertainment.” Ok then.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) last night announced, during a mass forum, that they have “taken the decision to move to an official national industrial action ballot” for all employees after failing to “resolve the points of disagreement” that exist between themselves and BT, Openreach and EE.

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is currently deploying their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of the city, has today introduced a new range of business packages with improved features (e.g. 4G based backup, money-back guarantee etc.).

CityFibre, which is currently working to deploy their 1Gbps FTTP broadband ISP network to cover 8 million UK premises over the next five years (here and here), has reportedly hired bankers at UBS and Rothschild to help it sell a significant minority stake (worth many hundreds of millions) to a third potential backer.

Hampshire-based business broadband ISP Onecom, which is backed by a £100m funding package from LDC and Ares Management Corporation (here), has added 450 indirect channel partners and over 5,000 telephony, hosted voice and on-premise customers after acquiring 9 Group (9 Retail and 9 Partners) for an undisclosed sum.

The UK Chancellor, Rishi Sunak MP, has today published his Budget 2021 statement and sadly there were no new details for the £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Programme. But we did get a few extra details on their recently confirmed plans for a new UK Infrastructure Bank, some of which had already been confirmed.

Lite Access, which specialises in deploying UK fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) broadband infrastructure, has officially appointed FRP Advisory Trading Limited as administrators and confirmed that they intend to “vigorously defend” themselves against Cityfibre’s position that they were in repudiatory breach of contract(s).

The Chairman of BT Group since November 2017, Jan du Plessis (aged 67), has today formally announced his intention to retire from the UK role – thought to be worth £700,000-a-year – just as soon as a successor can be appointed. The company’s Board has now begun the process of hunting for his replacement.

Communications provider MS3, which runs an independent Dark Fibre and business focused broadband network in Hull (East Yorkshire), has informed us that they are about to embark on a 70km long “city-wide expansion” of their “full fibre” network and this will also be used to serve local homes.
