The Directors of Doncaster-based budget ISP Origin Broadband, which last week hit the headlines due to staff redundancies (here), are now in the process of trying to reach a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) with its creditors. Documents seen by ISPreview reveal that Origin has around £5m in “total unsecured creditors“.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority has announced that it will bid for £12m of public funding from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) fund, which could be used to extend “ultrafast broadband” (e.g. FTTP) ISP networks to connect “tens of thousands of local homes and businesses.”

Cityfibre has secured the £11.9m contract to build a new Gigabit (1Gbps+) capable “full fibre” broadband / Ethernet network in Suffolk (England), which will initially focus on connecting public sector sites across 10 towns before being expanded to reach local businesses and possibly homes. ISP MLL Telecom is also involved.

A new report from Billmonitor has accused Ofcom of showing “little interest” in tackling the allegedly “Wild West” market for B2B mobile services. The investigation claimed that only one in ten small businesses get a “fair deal” from their mobile operator and EE is the most expensive UK provider for business contracts.

The Zayo Group has announced that over the next 12 months they intend to upgrade and expand their existing long haul fibre optic ring network in the UK, which will improve its capacity, coverage and should provide access to the country’s latest subsea cable crossings in both the Irish and North Seas.

The UK telecoms regulator has fined business phone and broadband ISP Cloud M £50,000 for refusing to let one of its customers (a small business) take their phone number with them when they wanted to switch provider. A £5K fine was also imposed after they failed to provide accurate and complete info. by the deadline.

Over the past couple of weeks a number of sources have contacted ISPreview.co.uk to alleged that Doncaster-based budget ISP Origin Broadband may be in the process of conducting a new redundancy consultation, which it’s claimed could result in the further loss of around 20 to 30 jobs.

The Government has today published their ‘National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline’ report, which reveals the scale of public and private investment that is underway or expected to be put toward 5G mobile and broadband ISP connectivity (especially full fibre FTTP) between 2018/19 and 2020/21 (financial year).

The ITS Technology Group, which has built several fibre optic broadband ISP networks around the UK, has launched a special Black Friday discount for small businesses within their network coverage that offers 200Mbps “full fibre” for just £99 +vat per month or 1Gbps for £245 (symmetrical speeds).

The latest trading update from TalkTalk has revealed that the ISP increased their on-net broadband customers to total 4,243,000, which is up by +24K during quarter to the end of Sept 2018 (vs +80k in the previous quarter). On top of that they’ve unveiled the “FibreNation” roll-out plan for their “full fibre” (FTTH) network.

The CEO of Vodafone Group, Nick Read, has told a meeting of investors that, at the wholesale fibre broadband ISP level, they’re “not engaging” with Openreach (BT) any more “in terms of any further opportunity,” which puts pay to earlier predictions of a new co-funded FTTP build. But they would talk to Comcast (Sky).

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has reported that they added +44,000 new fixed line home broadband customers during the last quarter (Q2 FY19) to total 479,000, which is down from the +52,000 added in the previous quarter to June 2018. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,055,000 (quarterly fall of -377,000).

The government has today revealed that 7,000 UK businesses and surrounding homes have taken advantage of their £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), but strong demand means they now expect the funding to dry up a year sooner than expected. In response the top voucher values have been cut to £2,500.

A new report from Sky News is claiming that BT has appointed investment bank Lazard to oversee the possible £200m+ sale of their BT Fleet division, which owns and manages many of the vehicles used by Openreach and various other companies including the AA, EDF and National Grid etc.

A Sky News report has today claimed that TalkTalk’s proposed £1.5bn plan to roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3 million UK premises may have stalled, which allegedly stems from a valuation dispute with investment partner Infracapital.

The latest financial update (calendar Q3 2018) from cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has seen them add a further 109,000 UK premises to their ultrafast broadband and TV network coverage, while their internet access subscriber base hit 5,202,900 (up by 36.4k in Q3 vs 30k in Q2 and 31.2k in Q1).

London focused UK ISP G.Networks and their investment partner Albion Capital have closed a new deal, which will result in Cube Infrastructure Managers (Cube IM) providing an “initial” £60m of additional funding to help roll-out FTTP “ultra-fast broadband” to serve 120,000 premises (“businesses and residents“).
