The Prince’s Countryside Fund is currently said to be working on a new ‘Village Survival Guide‘, which comes after the charity surveyed 3,000 people in rural parts of the United Kingdom and found that better broadband and mobile (4G) coverage was one of three changes that such communities desperately need.

BT has published their latest results to the end of June (Q1 2018/19 financial), which report that the coverage of Openreach’s “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+ via FTTP and G.fast) network has reached 1.7 million UK premises. But sadly they’ve begun hiding their retail ISP customer figures.

The remote Shetland Islands Council appears to be gearing up for a second attempt at bidding for money from the Government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which if successful could be used to extend a new Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTP etc.) network to cater for the proposed space launch site.

Telecoms giant Openreach (BT) has just published their first ever Annual Review 2017/18, which charts both their national network deployment progress and the many internal changes they’ve had to make over the past 12 months (mostly as a result of regulatory changes from Ofcom and the Government).

The City of London Corporation have announced that their new deal with UK ISPs Community Fibre, Hyperoptic and Vision Fibre Media has just resulted in two social housing estates (‘Avondale Square’ and ‘Southwark’) being upgraded to deliver a 1Gbps capable FTTH broadband network. Many more will follow.

One subtle development that appears to have been overlooked this week is the Government’s move to publish a new guide for civil engineering (street works), which sets the best practice when constructing the next generation of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) style broadband ISP networks.

Bradford-based UK ISP Exa Networks has been chosen by Cityfibre to supply businesses and education sites over their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network in West Sussex, which is being built with support from the Government’s £190m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund.

Telecoms giant Vodafone has today published their latest quarterly results to the end of June 2018 (Q1 FY19), which saw them add +52,000 new broadband and phone customers (down from +65,000 in the previous quarter) to total 435,000. Meanwhile their mobile base shrank to 17,432,000 (quarterly fall of -83,000).

Cityfibre has named the first streets in Aberdeen (Scotland) to benefit from their £40m (private investment) deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network with UK ISP Vodafone, which has just this week officially entered the construction phase.

UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today announced that customers of their TeraByte home broadband packages (Home::1), which includes 1000GB (GigaBytes) of monthly usage, will see their usage allowance double to 2000GB (2 TeraBytes) from August 2018, at no extra cost.

Openreach (BT) is to cut the prices of their wholesale “fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) products to ISPs by up to 40%, which they say is designed to encourage providers to switch more of their old copper line (ADSL) users on to faster internet connections and this in turn will help to improve coverage.

The national telecoms regulator has today followed yesterday’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (here) by setting out the core regulatory changes that they intend to pursue, which will support the government’s new plan and aim to spread Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks to all by 2033.

The Essex County Council (ECC) has awarded Openreach (BT) with a £3.4m contract to rollout “superfast broadband” (FTTC/P) ISP networks to cover an additional 3,100 premises in the UK county, which includes 1,500 in the borough of Basildon and 1,600 in the district of Braintree.

The UK government has today set out a range of new proposals (copper switch-off, regulatory reforms etc.) as part of their Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), which seeks to help boost investment and support for future 5G mobile and “full fibre” (FTTH/P) ultrafast broadband. But there are caveats.

Fibre optic UK network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve joined Deutsche Glasfaser, Open Fiber, Reykjavikur and SIRO as signatories of a new alliance, which aims to promote a wholesale-only build model and end the misuse of “fibre” terminology in consumer broadband ISP advertising.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that the completion of their joint Superfast Cymru contract with the Welsh Government has resulted in 733,000 extra premises across Wales being put within reach of faster broadband ISP speeds, which drops to 717,000 for those able to access “superfast” speeds of 30Mbps+.

Openreach is in Cardiff today to talk-up the progress of their “Fibre First” project, which among other things confirmed that over the past few months they’ve added 100K premises to their UK coverage of “full fibre” FTTP broadband (total of 600,000+ premises passed).
