Excluding the growing success of
Mobile Broadband equipped computer connections, handset (phone) based mobile Internet access is still suffering from some old teething problems.
Moneysupermarket's latest research indicates that while 72% of mobile users have a phone with Internet capabilities, just 24% actually make use of them.
However, out of the 11 million adults who have embraced it, men spend an average of 16 minutes a week surfing the web on their phone, compared to 11 minutes for women (average for all adults is 13.7 minutes). The most common things to look up via mobile Internet access are:
- Email (35%)
- News (28%)
- Sport (24%)
- Maps (22%)
- Social networking sites (16%)
- Adult content (3%)
Costs and functionality are the main obstacles for users. Seven in ten people have no idea how much they would be charged to use the Internet on their mobile and 24% say the service is too slow. Meanwhile 13% of those with Internet capability on their mobile believe the service is pointless.
