The Times reports that BT could announce a cut of around 10,000 jobs from its 160,000 strong workforce. There's also an £8 billion strong deficit in the company’s £33 billion pension fund to consider. Last year’s pledge to spend £1.5bn rolling out super-fast fibre optic (FTTC, FTTP) broadband services will hopefully not be impacted.

The BBC's iPlayer boss, Anthony Rose, has revealed in an interview with ZDNet that on a big peak usage day its service can eat up a colossal 100Gbps (about 12.5GigaByte’s per second) of broadband bandwidth (total). The interview (here) also talks about what we can expect from iPlayer 3.0 and why the BBC backpedalled on its controversial P2P based IPTV download service (no mention of how some big ISPs moaned about what that did to their networks, a lot [Tiscali]).

Communications provider Entanet , a supplier of broadband services to several UK ISPs and resellers , has raised some concerns with the way the Internet Watch Foundation's (IWF) block list works. The IWF works with ISPs to help filter out sites that contain illegal child sexual abuse and race hate content. Sadly the methods used to deploy the system haven't always worked, with last year’s Wikipedia block (original news) being a prime example.
