ISP Tiscali UK could finalise its sale to The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Opal etc. ) by this weekend, reports The Times today. The move would turn Carphone into the country's second largest broadband operator with a total of nearly 4.6m high-speed subscribers, dethroning Virgin Media from the same position and placing the new group just behind BT.

Regulator Ofcom has released its latest quarterly (Q4-2008) Telecommunications Market Data Tables (Download the .PDF here), which includes a breakdown of total small business and residential broadband connections. At the end of 2008 there were 17.3 million residential and small business UK broadband connections, an increase of 2.1% on Q3 2008, which breaks down as follows.

Business ISP Internet Central has revamped its website and launched a new range of BT 21CN ADSL2+ based up to 24Mbps (download) broadband services. Prices start at just £12.99 +vat (3GB usage allowance) per month and the service is currently available from over 600 telephone exchanges. Presently the maximum upload speed offered for related connections is 1Mbps, although this will soon be upgraded to 2.5Mbps.

The latest O2 Digital Families Report has revealed that most UK families would rather cut down on food and utility bills than their broadband Internet connection. Questioned on the items they are reluctant to cut back on in the credit crunch, families chose the Internet (67%) over school uniforms (59%), family holidays (30%) and the weekly food shop (24%).

Virgin Media has reported its latest first quarter 2009 results, which saw the operators total broadband subscriber base (cable and ADSL) increase from 3,934,800 in Q4-2008 to 3,977,100 at the end of Q1-2009. This represents a slower but still fairly stable rate of growth over the previous quarter and puts Virgin Media within touching distance of a major 4 Million milestone.

Internet security giant McAfee has issued its latest quarterly Threat Report for Q1-2009, which reveals that junk email (SPAM) now accounts for 86% of all email (down from an average of 90% in 2008). Elsewhere cybercriminals have taken control of almost 12 million new IP addresses (Internet connected computers) since January, a 50% increase over 2008.

Business ISP Timico has today announced full availability of its new up to 16Mbps ADSL2+ based broadband services, which utilise BT's latest 21CN network. The provider notes that ADSL2+ is often marketed as being capable of up to 24Mbps, though it has chosen to list a slower speed and thus avoid misleading customers about potential performance.

Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for April 2009. It shows that the average UK broadband download speed has now broken through the 4Mbps mark for the first time and hit 4.137Mbps, while the average upload speed stood at 427Kbps (0.42Mbps).

UK ISP and TV operator Virgin Media (VM) has allegedly developed secret plans to make its broadband and telephone platform more accessible, which could involve opening its cable network up to wholesale access by rival providers, such Sky and O2 etc. The move, which has been denied by Virgin (see below), would be designed to increase revenue and avoid future regulatory pressure on the matter.

Avanti Communications, a UK satellite operator, has hinted that its new satellite (HYLAS), which is due to launch later this year, could help to solve the country's rural broadband problems by delivering a universal 2Mbps service for just £15 per month. The news follows last month's signing by Avanti of four major new supply deals to help distribute its future services (original news).

One of the UK's biggest Mobile Broadband and Wi-Fi Hotspot operators , T-Mobile , could soon be sold if reports in the Financial Times are to be believed. It's understood that the group’s parent, Deutsche Telekom, is under pressure from two main shareholders to sell up.

Broadband provider TitanADSL, which use to be almost exclusively Entanet based, has teamed up with two other unbundled (LLU) broadband suppliers to launch a new range of up to 24Mbps products with no exit fees, blocked ports, throttling or lengthy contract terms (just 1 month). The highlight is a £22 per month package, which claims to offer a "truly unlimited 24MB/s [1Mbps upload] service with no restrictions."

Virgin Media appears to be bucking the protectionist trend of other UK ISPs by launching a new 60 second TV advertising campaign to help promote its "unique fibre optic [BROADBAND] network." The ad depicts a man working on his laptop in the kitchen, which is promptly interrupted by flashing lights and shaking. Sounds like a typical Friday night out.

Broadband ISP PlusNet has added yet another 155Mbps segment of central ADSL bandwidth capacity to its older 20CN based network. Customers connecting to the new segment will access the Internet through the gateway known as pcl-ag04. We've lost track of how many new 155Mbps pipes they've added recently. Meanwhile some users are still hoping to see performance improvements.

The promotion, which only appears to be valid for Internet enabled smartphone users and not USB Modem based Mobile Broadband connections, is designed to promote the operators new 50p per day mobile Internet tariff. Sadly the FREE DAY is only available today and ends tonight.
