The results from 450 respondents to our latest survey reveal that just under 36.6% thought their ISPs telephone based customer support was GOOD, which dropped to just 27.5% for email support. Readers sighted "unhelpful replies" (45.7%) as being the most frustrating aspect of their ISPs support, while fewer felt that "slow or no replies at all" (29.7%) or "costly voice calls" (24.4%) were bigger frustrations.

UK ISP TalkTalk ( The Carphone Warehouse ), which just over one week ago nabbed rival broadband provider Tiscali UK for a bargain basement price (original news), has issued a list of common questions they've been receiving since the buy. Naturally they also include some answers to those questions too.. well, it'd be a pretty silly Q&A if they didn't :smirk: .

The European Commission (EC) has given the green light for the UK's Inmarsat and Dublin-based Solaris Mobile to deploy mobile satellite services via the 2GHz spectrum band around Europe. The new services, which aim to be up and running within just 2 years, could help to deliver satellite broadband and TV services to remote and rural areas.

The latest figures released via Orange UK's fifth Digital Media Index reveal that usage of Mobile Broadband USB Modems (Dongles) has increased by 4,125% during the past 12 months and related subscriptions have surged by over 504%. Similarly mobile data usage consumed by mobile handsets (phones, smartphones) increases by 108%.

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB), an executive non-departmental public body (NDPB) established by the Government in 2007 and sponsored by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), has invested £1,000,000 into over a dozen research projects for the development of ULTRA Fast 1 and 10Gbps broadband technologies.

Today is officially known as Silver Surfers Day. The event is organised by Digital Unite - in partnership with Ofcom and UK online centre’s, and aims to help encourage older people across the UK to try out computers and use the Internet. Ofcom's own research found that less than 40% of people over 65 have the Internet at home - dropping down to 22% among the over 75s.

ISP Tiscali UK has reported its latest set of quarterly results to 31st March 2009 (Q1), which shows a continued decline in broadband (ADSL) subscribers from 1.768m in Q4-2008 to 1.7m at the end of Q1-2009. This is a more significant reduction than the minor decline of -6,000 seen between Q3 and Q4 of last year, though between Q2 and Q3 of 2008 they lost -64,000.

Customers of UK ISP and TV operator Virgin Media will be pleased to learn that their cable broadband usage allowances (does not apply to Virgin.net ADSL subscribers) have been raised. The changes aren't all huge but they will be noticeable and differ slightly from the updated Traffic Management policy trial that VM started to trial during February (original news).

UK ISP O2 ( Be Broadband ) has released its latest quarterly results to the end of March 2009 (Q1), highlighting a continuation of its rapid broadband subscriber uptake by going from 340,866 in Q4-2008 to 404,484 now. However the growth of around +63,618 new broadband users represents a rough 10k per quarter slowdown on past results.

Despite 95% of people claiming to use anti-virus software, almost 12 million people (24%) have still had their computer affected by a virus, hacker, malware or spyware in the past six months. Some 39% described the assault as causing a major disruption and a further 10% admit to suffering a deadly attack, rendering their computer unusable; 5% admit to having personal details stolen.

BT Group has released its latest first quarter results to 31st March 2009 (Q1), which reveals that the operator managed to rack up a total of 4.8m retail broadband ( BT , PlusNet etc. ) customers. This growth (net DSL additions of 99,000) compares with 4.7m in Q4-2008 and 4.6m in Q3-2008.

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) has released its sixth annual global IDC piracy study, which reveals that over a quarter (27%) of software on PC's in the UK is now illegal. Industry losses due to software piracy in the UK amounted to £1.49 billion in 2008 – the highest level ever. The study states that the growth of broadband Internet access and P2P file sharing has made it a lot easier for piracy to flourish.

Broadband ISP and telephony supplier murphx UK has signed a new interconnect deal with BT, which gives them access to the operators new 21st Century Network (21CN) platform and faster (up to 24Mbps ADSL2+) broadband services.

The Independent Spectrum Broker (ISB), which was appointed by the government to find a solution for sharing mobile spectrum between the five main UK operators, has concluded that creating universal access to Mobile Broadband services (preferably offering speeds of at least 2Mbps) demands that a spectrum cap be imposed.

The latest April 2009 statistics from Nielsen Online reveal that Facebook is now the most popular website in the UK, which has increased its market share from 7.2% at the same time in 2008 to 12.7% now (+5.6%). The top ten most heavily used UK web brands (below) also accounted for 45% of all UK broadband Internet time, which compares with 42% last year.

The latest investment update from Virgin Media reveals that the operator plans to expand its cable broadband, phone and TV network to cover 500,000 new UK homes and businesses over the next few years. The first phase of this expansion will take place during the current year, with 50,000 new premises being brought within their coverage by the end of 2009.

The latest BT Business research has revealed that over half (55%) of employees are working from home via broadband more often since the financial crisis began. The need to save money is the main reason for the majority (88%) of respondents to conduct their working day from the comfort of their living room, bedroom or garden shed.
