Mobile operator and ISP O2 has agreed a new five year managed services agreement with BT. The deal will allow O2 to enter into the UKs business market with fixed land-line voice and broadband services, complementing its existing range of popular consumer products. The move should save O2 some cash too because it will not have to construct its own self-build solution.

The West Country council of Torbay has just gained a newly upgraded high capacity broadband connection from UK ISP Eclipse Internet . The 30Mbps Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) leased line is an upgrade from the council’s old 4Mbps DIA, and can be increased to 100Mbps.

Every once in awhile a news story comes along that causes uncontrollable spasms of hitting ones head against the wall, here's another. Stephen Taylor Heath of law firm Lupton Fawcett has told OUT-LAW.COM, an online legal/law information site, that UK broadband ISPs should be made directly responsible for all content published online.

The results from last nights Top 10 Broadband comparison site awards are now in and there are some familiar faces on the winners list. ISP O2 scooped the award for "Best Rated Home Broadband" and Virgin Media grabbed top honours for "Fastest Home Broadband" with an average speed of 8.15Mbps (based on over 400,000 speedtests). Vodafone also received heavy praise for its Mobile Broadband service.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint made by BT against a press (newspaper) advert for BSkyB's Sky Broadband ISP service. The advert misleadingly claimed that BT and Virgin Media would slow customers’ connection speeds down during peak times and that Sky's Unlimited package would not.

BT has revealed the existence of Broadband Enabling Technology (BET), a new enhancement that aims to bring faster broadband services to remote and rural areas. Existing broadband ADSL based services become slow the further they are from a telephone exchange, with homes of 5 to 6.5km away suffering poor performance. By comparison BET claims it can deliver speeds of up to 1Mbps at distances approaching 12km!

Ofcom has today removed one of the last pieces of regulation in the retail fixed-line telephone market, allowing BT to offer discounted bundles of services including line rental, voice calls, broadband, television and more. Ofcom concluded that BT no longer had 'significant market power' (SMP) and that competition from rivals (e.g. Virgin Media , Sky Broadband etc.) is strong enough that such tight controls are no longer required.

Business ISP THUS (Cable and Wireless) has pulled the plug on its Pipecall Voice over Internet Protocol ( VoIP ) service, describing it as being impossible to maintain. Instead the provider is encouraging existing customers to seek a comparable product from BT , which should be able to port their numbers over.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has used a new optical solution from Nortel to add a 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) capacity enhancement to its existing submarine cable link between the UK and Ireland. Both the terrestrial and submarine portions of VMs network have now been upgraded to quadruple network capacity, which helps to support the ISPs new generation of up to 50Mbps broadband services.

The days of unregulated broadband Video-on-Demand (VoD) Internet TV services are coming to an end. Online TV-like setups, such as those run by the BBC ( iPlayer ), ITV ( ITV Player ) and BT Vision (i.e. those that make programmes available for members of the public to view at a time of their choice), will soon have to adhere to a new set of rules.

The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), which campaigns for the protection of performers' and musicians' rights, has announced its opposition to an amended government proposal that would force UK ISPs to disconnect customers suspected of illegal downloading (original news). Mobile operator Orange UK appears to have suffered a double whammy of allegedly unrelated Internet service outages between Wednesday and Thursday this week. Both their mobile data ( Mobile Broadband ) and home land-line broadband services were struck by the problems, which prevented an unknown number of customers from getting online.

ISP TitanADSL has launched a new promotion offering FREE connections on its unbundled ( LLU ) 'up to' 24Mbps Unlimited Standard and Pro packages until the end of September 2009. In addition the price of Titan's special 1 month contract based unlimited package has been reduced from £22 to £18.99 per month until the end of October.

Mobile operator Vodafone has joined Three (3) UK in launching its own portable battery powered Wi-Fi Mobile Broadband USB Modem router; otherwise known as the MiFi 2352 (manufactured by Novatel). Sadly the device will initially only be launched for business customers in Germany, Romania and Spain.. but we expect it to surface in the UK eventually.

A homing pigeon called 'Winston' has successfully transferred 4GigaByte's (GB) of data on a memory card between two 50 mile apart Durban (South Africa) companies in the space of just over 2 hours, while the same amount of data had barely managed 4% over the firm’s broadband link.

Regulator Ofcom has said that mis-selling of UK telecommunications products, such as broadband and voice line services, remains a serious problem. The regulator has already attempted to curb the situation by toughening its stance with a Code of Practice (CoP), though this has apparently not been enough and "the level of mis-selling remains high".

The Communications Consumer Panel (CCP) has called on the UK government to deliver on its Digital Britain promises. In particular the panel wants to see key pledges, such as a fast / reliable universal broadband service for everybody by 2012 and action to stimulate investment in next-generation broadband, tackled sooner rather than later.
