Ofcom UK has announced that the charges consumers often face when attempting to leave their landline phone contracts early - 'early termination charges' - will be slashed by up to 85%! Better yet, this will also apply to landline customers who receive broadband in the same package.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has confirmed that it is launching a review into how internet services, specifically those offered by broadband ISP and mobile operators, are marketed. The review itself will take a comprehensive look at the use and abuse of misleading broadband speed and "unlimited" claims.

Digital UK, a not for profit organisation formed by the broadcasters to assist consumers in converting to Digital TV (i.e. Digital Switchover), has revealed that it will be able to hand back £55 million to the government in 2012 when the project completes.

Market regulator Ofcom UK has accused a London-based phone and broadband provider (ISP), Continental Telecom, of using dubious tactics after consumers were switched to the service without their express and informed consent (i.e. slamming) and kept in the dark about their consumer rights. The ISP could now face a significant fine if it fails to take the appropriate action, which could be worth up to 10% of the company's turnover.

The Broadband Forum has released its latest global broadband and IPTV (Internet TV) statistics for Q1-2010, which are sourced from Point Topic data. The data shows that broadband lines grew by 14 Million during the first quarter (16.6m in Q1-2009), bringing the worldwide total to 484,788,597. This represents a 3.12% growth in the quarter and 12.41% in the last 12 months.

The boss of UK telecoms firm O-bit has accused the government of "shirking its responsibility" over plans to foster and support the deployment of superfast broadband services around the country. The comments follow a key speech last week by Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, the Olympics Media and Sport (DCMS), in which he attacked the existing broadband infrastructure and outlined his vision for improving upon it (here).

A new study based on data collected from 250,000 broadband ISP speed tests, which was conducted over a 90 day period, has concluded that the fastest time of day for web browsing is 2am, when the average download speed is 7Mbps, while the slowest time is 8pm when a relatively sluggish 4.73Mbps is the average.

The 2010 Fifa World Cup has reportedly set a new world record for internet usage after Akamai, which delivers 20% of global online traffic, saw a significant peak last Friday and right over the weekend. Traffic to the top news websites peaked at noon Eastern Time (ET) with 12.1 million visitors per minute.

The boss of Virgin Media UK, Neil Berkett, has today said that he does support Project Canvas after all.. or at least its original aims. Project Canvas is an open UK standard that will deliver subscription-free broadband TV services directly into homes via your ISP and special IPTV set-top-boxes.

The latest survey from uSwitch has warned that confusion over Fair Usage Policies (FUP) and general UK ISP restrictions has put 8 million (48%) broadband consumers at risk of service limits and possibly even disconnection because they have no idea of their usage allowance.
