The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). Telecoms giant BT (EE), and possibly several other UK network operators, have reportedly missed the 31st December 2023 deadline to remove Huawei’s equipment from their network cores. This puts them at risk of being fined up to 10% of their revenue or £100,000 per day for every day that they fail to comply.

Information supplied by BT and EE to ISPreview has revealed that customers on their fixed broadband ISP network delivered a modest increase in internet traffic over Christmas, but no new records were set. Christmas Day itself saw data traffic peak at 19.57Tbps (Terabits per second), which is up by 7.23% from 18.25Tbps last year.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve managed to bring their gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to the remote Fair Isle, which is a tiny island that sits around halfway between Shetland and the Orkney islands (Scotland) – the longest distance (100km) they’ve been able to transmit a continuous fibre signal anywhere in the UK.

Surging inflation has meant that the past couple of years have been, to put it mildly, an uncomfortable experience for many broadband ISP and mobile users. In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today forecast that Saturday 23rd December 2023 will be the “busiest day for SMS delivery scams“, with criminals targeting shoppers in the last-minute rush before Christmas. The same day in 2022 saw 3 million SMS scam attempts being blocked by the operator – the highest number of the entire year.

Mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK have this morning become the first providers to announce that their ongoing deployment of a new 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network on the London Underground – in partnership with Boldyn Networks and Nokia – has now been extended to the Elizabeth line for the first time.

The UK government has this morning announced the signing of a new charter with major broadband ISPs and landline phone providers, including Sky Broadband, BT, Virgin Media (O2) and TalkTalk, which sets out “new measures” to protect vulnerable customers when upgrading phone lines to a new digital (IP / VoIP based) network.

The Local Government Association, which represents councils across England and Wales, has warned that while the majority of councils are aware of the looming mobile network closures, almost two-thirds of them are still using devices and systems reliant on 2G and 3G connectivity to at least a small extent.

A meeting in the House of Commons was held yesterday that saw MPs from different parties debate the forthcoming withdrawal of BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line networks (PSTN phones and WLR) by Dec 2025, which touched on a variety of issues from battery backup to problems with the reliability of digital replacements.

A new report from business broadband ISP and communications provider Gamma and the Centre of Economics Business Research (CEBR) has claimed that 29% of UK businesses are still “completely unaware” of the upcoming move to switch-off the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in December 2025.

Connect has today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test 2024 study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 38 towns and along over 10,400km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again, while O2 (VMO2) continued their trend of being bottom.

Ofcom has today published their latest biannual UK consumer affordability report, which reveals that the take-up of cheaper social broadband ISP and mobile tariffs for those on state benefits has increased to 380,000 households (up from 220,000 six months ago). But that still represents just 8.3% of households on Universal Credit (4.6 million).

Telecoms giant BT has today unveiled the development of a new IP transmission technology, called MAUD (Multicast-Assisted Unicast Delivery), which promises to be a more reliable, quality-focused and sustainable way of delivering content (e.g. video and TV) over the internet – doing it in a way that’s both cheaper and more efficient.

Mobile network operators including EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (VMO2) are facing a class action claim worth “at least” £3.285bn from consumer rights champion Justin Gutmann and the law firm Charles Lyndon, which accuses them of historically overcharging for mobile handsets beyond the end of their contractual term.

Telecoms giant BT has revealed that the overall volume of internet traffic across their fixed broadband ISP network reached a new peak of 30.1Tbps (Terabits per second) last night at around 9pm, which is up from around 28Tbps last year and 25Tbps in 2021.
