Consumer Focus (CF), a statutory organisation campaigning for a fair deal for consumers in the UK, has called for the debate on illegal broadband file sharing to focus on the reform of the UK copyright licensing system, not on punitive enforcement measures (i.e. customer disconnection from ISPs).

Details are extremely thin on the ground at the moment but ISPreview has begun to receive some reports of problems being experienced by cable giant Virgin Media UK. Several broadband customers are reporting a total loss of connection and the operators website is, at the time of writing, refusing to load.

Murphx, a UK network and telecoms solutions provider, has become the latest ISP to join trials of BT's next generation fibre optic cable based Fibre to the Cabinet ( FTTC ) broadband technology, which will initially deliver download speeds of up to 40Mbps (60Mbps in the future) and upload speeds of between 2Mbps to 15Mbps.

The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Tiscali , Opal etc. ) has confirmed that it is gearing up to launch a new form of 'Parental Control' for broadband ISP customers. This will allow parents to restrict Internet access via cinema-style classifications (U, 14, 18), which will include the blocking of file sharing sites that host illegal torrent downloads (e.g. The PirateBay).

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has called BT "shameful" after revealing that the operator had done nothing to stop thousands of illegal music file sharers on its service. The BPI claims to have collected the IP addresses of 100,000 BT Broadband ISP customers that are suspected of involvement with the activity.

The latest consumer research from BroadbandChoices, which was conducted with the help of 3,950 respondents during June and July this year, has revealed that 34% value the connection reliability of their broadband ISP service above speed (30%) and value for money (23%).

The latest research from Gartner has estimated that there will be a total of 422 Million global households with a fixed broadband connection ( i.e. ADSL , Cable Modem , FTTH ) in the home by the end of 2009, up from 382m in 2008. This will increase to 580m by 2013.

The Trading Standards Institute (TSI) and BT have teamed up to pressure Ofcom into taking more robust action against the "mis-selling misery" being caused by telecoms (broadband and voice) providers who hijack consumers’ phone lines. The campaign appears timed to coincide with Ofcoms new consultation (original news) on tougher proposals to tackle the problem.

We reported yesterday that, from 1st January 2010, BT Wholesale planned to reduce its prices, specifically for their 'up to' 24Mbps ( ADSL2+ ) services - Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC). Today we have managed to gain some more detail on the specifics of that reduction and what it could mean for UK ISPs (those using BT’s platform).

The Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), which campaigns for the protection of performers' and musicians' rights, has appeared to u-turn on its opposition to an amended government (Digital Britain) proposal that would force UK broadband ISPs to disconnect customers who are suspected of illegal downloading (original news).

BT Wholesale is reportedly gearing up to announce the next phase of its 21st Century Network ( 21CN ) based 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+ broadband technology rollout, which works over the old/existing copper wire based BT infrastructure. The move will see BT's coverage of the service rise from 40% of UK homes and businesses to 75% by the spring of 2011.

Satellite ISP Tariam UK has cut the monthly cost of its Eutelsat Tooway based Homenet product, which offers download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps and uploads of up to 0.38Mbps; prices now start at £35 inc. VAT per month. The one-off installation and hardware setup fee has also been reduced to £717.00.

Plans to impose £0.50p per month tax on all fixed UK phone lines (Next Generation Fund), which would be used to help fund deployment of next generation broadband services around the country, look to be back after the government confirmed it would soon be made law; crucially, before the next general election.
