The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST IiS), which is a UK not-for-profit organisation that promotes the legitimate use of software, has launched a scathing attack on the governments "political grandstanding" plans to impose a Three Strikes system of ISP account disconnect upon those who are suspected of repeatedly downloading illegal files.

The BBC's Watchdog consumer affairs TV show last night revealed that three of the UK's top wireless ( Wi-Fi Hotspot ) broadband operators , including BT Openzone , The Cloud and T-Mobile , are vulnerable to hacking attacks. Internet security firm Garlik states that, over the last year, there has been a 207% increase in 'account takeover fraud', where criminals access existing accounts rather than using stolen identities.

New research conducted by BT Mobile Broadband and VisitBritain has revealed that nearly two thirds of Brits prefer to spend time on online with their laptop whilst away on holiday, with only one third preferring to spend romantic time with a loved one. It also revealed that two thirds of 18-25 year olds will mostly be spending their time updating facebook statuses, tweeting or uploading photographs.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has reported its latest third quarter 2009 results. Total broadband subscribers increased from 3,980,900 in Q2 to 4,027,400 in Q3, which represents a steady return to growth after a slow second quarter when just a few thousand broadband customers were added.

ISP Orange UK (France Telecom) has issued its latest third quarter results to the end of September 2009, which shows that the provider is still shedding broadband subscribers and has dropped from a total of 954,000 in Q2-2009 to 899,000 in Q3.

The European Commission (EC) today moved to the second phase of an infringement proceeding against the UK concerning a lack of full privacy and personal data protection. The move is related to the government’s inability to clamp down on Phorm , which controversially worked with broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns.

ISP Tiscali UK ( TalkTalk ) has announced the launch of a new legal DRM-free music subscription download service in partnership with eMusic. It is available to all of Tiscali's portal (website) users and contains a catalogue of over 6.5 million MP3s. It's hoped that the new service will also help to combat illegal p2p file sharing.

At about 10:30PM on October 29th, 1969, the first full connection was established over a 50Kbps AT&T line that turned an Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), the world's first operational packet switching network - funded and developed by the U.S. Department of Defence, into a two node network. The government’s business secretary, Lord Peter Mandelson, has confirmed that the UK will begin adopting the controversial "Three-Strikes" system to tackle illegal file sharing downloads from April next year. Sadly account suspension, where a "suspected" abuser is removed from their broadband ISP following several warning notices, will indeed be part of the system for repeat offenders.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a trade association for the British record industry, has reported a record breaking year for UK singles with more than 117m sold to date (115.1m in 2008). Legal digital downloads via broadband ISPs are the primary reason and have rapidly overtaken sales of CD singles.

Broadband analyst firm Point Topic has highlighted how deep the digital broadband divide is between the North and the South of the UK. The research classed 68 cities, towns and districts as having high broadband penetration, but only 3 of these are North and West of a line from the Wash to the Bristol Channel.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld two complaints against two separate national press adverts for BSkyB's ( Sky Broadband ) bundled broadband, tv and phone services. The first complaint concerned an advert that promoted a bundle of services for £16.50 per month. This was deemed misleading because it was already known at the time that the subscription fee was due to rise less than two months after the ad appeared, which had been omitted from the ad "in error".

British broadcaster and ISP BSkyB ( Sky Broadband ) has continued its content deal with Microsoft this week by launching their Sky Player Internet TV service on the software giant’s XBox 360 games console. Broadband connected users can now watch on-demand content via their console and up to 24 live streaming TV channels. But keep an eye on how much of that precious bandwidth you use or your ISP might get angry.

The CEO of French broadband ISP Vivendi, Jean-Bernard Levy, has called on the UK to follow France's lead and clamp down on Internet piracy or risk damage to the economy. Ironically the current UK proposals are now technically tougher (over the top more like) than those adopted in France which, after an intervention from the country’s constitutional court, now guarantees "suspected" illegal file sharers a court hearing prior to disconnection.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has launched new parental control software called Magic Desktop. The service provides a "walled garden" environment so children can visit only the websites that have first been approved by parents or grandparents and can email only those people on a list of parent-approved contacts. It also means they can't access any files on your computer.
