fibrestream ukA UK community network specialist in Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband services, Fibrestream ( NextGenUs ), has uploaded a new video to show what happens when a rural village like Ashby de la Launde in Lincolnshire goes from receiving sub-1Mbps Mobile Broadband speeds to getting 72Mbps via a "super-fast" fibre optic Fibre-to-the-Home ( FTTH ) connection.

Regular readers may recall that we first revealed Fibrestream's project back in June 2010 (here), with rollout of the village's 100Mbps (Megabits per second) capable network finally beginning in August (here). What's most important is that this privately funded and community owned network was partly built by the community itself and thus hasn't required even one penny of Taxpayers Money to deliver.

We can only imagine what might be achieved if the government thought more outside of the box and gave isolated rural communities the option of building their own network. It could easily end up being cheaper and faster than funding quick-fix style Satellite solutions or waiting years for Mobile Broadband operators to improve their coverage.

Excellent work, this sort of work should be done around Britain.

How many toolbars does she need in IE? lol! Might get better performance with Google Chrome.

I can't imagine how much junk she has installed on her computer, which if she removed it all would work faster :D

She doesn't need 100Mb/s. She needs to pay someone to remove the crud from her PC. No doubt it's already part of a botnet. 100Mb/s just added to a botnet! Great! ;-)

fantastic to see the first village go live. Well done Ashby. Let us hope many more follow.
strange how men don't like tabs. My dad will only do one thing at once, whereas we ladies have to multitask. I can end up with far more tabs open than that, simply because it saves loading them again. With fibre I suppose I could close them all and open instantly when needed? assuming host is equally fast...

Not "tabs" chris, "toolbars" cool . Big difference, you normally get a lot of toolbars when there's a lot of crap installed on your PC, since mostly those things come with added spyware and just bog your computer down.

As Mark said, not tabs, toolbars. I generally can have upto 15-20 tabs open at once.

all government needs to do is keep out of the way.

In the case of Ashby did any part of government either help or hinder the project, beyond providing the competitive and deregulated environment that allowed it to flourish ?
