Scottish Labour's European Member of Parliament (MEP), David Martin, has been appointed as the new investigator for the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). Critics view this as a "worrying sign" and claim that Martin has a poor record of "protecting freedoms online".

Consultancy firm AT Kearney has claimed that the UK internet economy is now valued at £82bn, which means that every £1 spent on internet access generates £5 in revenue. The news comes ahead of the government's new Communications Bill green paper.

The European Union (EU) and 22 of its Member States, which still includes the United Kingdom (UK), has today officially signed the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in Japan. Some fear that the treaty could turn internet providers into a police force for Rights Holders.

BT and TalkTalk, have today begun their appeal against the governments controversial Digital Economy Act (DEA). The ISPs claim that the anti-piracy act is not compatible with several European laws, a position that was upheld last year by Lord Justice Lewison.
