Broadband provider TalkTalk UK has warned that the majority of music fans will switch to alternative ways of accessing copyright-protected content for free if using peer-to-peer (P2P) services leaves them vulnerable to disconnection. The ISP reports that 80% (577) of those aged 18-34 in its new Opinium survey said they would switch to using methods which are undetectable.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has today been ousted as the true source of Amendment 120A (Clause 18). The controversial 120A was rushed into the Digital Economy Bill (DEB) at the last minute, without sufficient debate or consultation, and could lead to mass internet censorship in the UK; websites such as YouTube are potentially at risk of being blocked.

The European Parliament has approved a common resolution that calls for openness over Europe and the USA's Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations. ACTA is a treaty that has been in the works for over two years and seeks to establish international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement, such as against those suspected of unlawfully downloading copyright content through their ISP.

The bosses of several major broadband ISPs and Internet firms, such as BT , Virgin Media and Google, have issued an open letter to the FT criticising the governments last-minute addition of Amendment 120A to the Digital Economy Bill (DEB). 120A would force ISPs into blocking websites deemed to contain "a substantial proportion" of content that infringes copyright, which could just as easily apply to YouTube as it would a dodgy P2P links site (original news).

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has estimated that UK ISPs could generate direct revenue of £103m from legal digital music sales by 2013. The study, which was conducted by Ovum, found that such figures would be possible, but only if all of the country’s six largest providers ( Virgin Media , Sky Broadband , BT Retail , O2 , Orange and TalkTalk ) launched bundled digital music services this year.

Consumer Focus UK has revealed new research that shows how four in ten people are unable to name a single online music service at all - despite there being over 20 on the market. Furthermore the nine in ten (85%) who are aware of online music services, have only heard of iTunes and Amazon.

The Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) has referred Davenport Lyons, an infamous law firm involved with protecting specialist intellectual property rights, to a disciplinary tribunal. The move follows a 2008 complaint by Which?, who claimed that the firm had used "excessive" and "bullying" conduct in pursuit of those it suspected of being involved with illegal broadband ISP file-sharing (original news).

The UK Internet Services Providers Association ( ISPA ) has said that its members are "bitterly disappointed" after amendment 120A to the Digital Economy Bill was voted through in the House of Lords yesterday. The change could force UK broadband providers into blocking any website deemed to contain "a substantial proportion" of content that infringes copyright (see yesterdays news). That might just as easily apply to YouTube as it would a P2P links site.
