Virgin Media UK has announced that it added +17,500 new broadband ISP subscribers in the latest quarter (Q4) to 31st December 2011 and is now home to a total of 4,351,100.

A new survey conducted with over 1,200 UK based readers of the independent consumer Internet Service Provider (ISP) information website, ISPreview.co.uk, has found that 57% would pay more for a house equipped with superfast broadband access.

Consultancy firm AT Kearney has claimed that the UK internet economy is now valued at £82bn, which means that every £1 spent on internet access generates £5 in revenue. The news comes ahead of the government's new Communications Bill green paper.

BT has announced that it is now home to a total of 6,144,000 retail broadband ISP subscribers in the UK and has begun testing a new 1Gbps fibre optic (FTTP) service. The telecoms giant has also launched a new 'FTTP on Demand' service, which could in theory allow them to deploy ultrafast 330Mbps

Ofcom, the United Kingdom's telecoms regulator, has revealed in a new study that broadband ISPs in the UK deliver a national average internet download speed of 7.6Mbps (up from 6.8Mbps in July 2011). Sadly most continue to advertise headline speeds that are double what they actually deliver to customers.
