3 Mobile UK Scraps Out-of-Bundle Data Charges for Mobile Broadband

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that it is bringing an “end to out-of-bundle data charges for all new Smartphone contract customers“. Instead new customers will be given a choice between one of the operators all-you-can-eat (aka – “Ultimate Internet“) Mobile Broadband data offerings (from £18 a month) or a 250MB allowance with a “guarantee” of no out of bundle data charges.

Sky UK Offers 9 Months Half Price Unlimited Broadband and Calls Bundle

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today launched a new UK promotion that offers 9 months half price unlimited broadband (i.e. £5 per month instead of the usual £10) to new customers when the service is taken alongside their free calls and phone line rental bundle.

Deutsche Telekom Break Record with 512Gbps Data Speed via Fibre Optic Cable

Researchers working for Deutsche Telekom (DT), a German telecommunications giant, and Alcatel-Lucent have broken last year’s world record (here) after they were successfully able to send 400Gbps (Gigabits per second) worth of usable data over a long distance single optical-fiber wavelength channel (running at a total of 512Gbps – the difference was used for error correction) for the first time.

The communications regulator, Ofcom UK, has quitely published a new “small-scale report” that investigated the quality of experience and user satisfaction when using broadband Satellite ISP services for applications such as online video gaming (multiplayer), Virtual Private Networks (VPN), video/audio streaming and Voice-over-IP (VoIP).

KC Claim Residents of Beverley Now Receive the Fastest Speeds in the UK

KC, the incumbent internet and phone provider for Hull and East Riding (Yorkshire, UK), has claimed that the ongoing roll-out of their new Lightstream fibre optic broadband service (FTTH / FTTC), which kicked off last month, has managed to connect over 500 customers in the market town of Beverley. As a result the town is now said to have “the fastest speeds in the country“.

Broadband ISPs BT and the TalkTalk Group have officially lost a second appeal against their demands for a Judicial Review (JR) of the controversial 2010 Digital Economy Act (DEA). The UK providers had claimed that significant chunks of the act, which seeks to identify, warn (letters) and possibly even disconnect (“suspend“) those suspected of “illegal” internet piracy (copyright infringement) from their ISP, were incompatible with EU law.

Mobile operator and ISP Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) has announced that new customers to its new fixed line “unlimited” usage Home Broadband and Phone bundle package can now also benefit from an included £60 M&S voucher (Marks and Spencer) and double anytime call minutes (1,000) to UK mobiles (normally 500 minutes) every month when they sign-up online.

Report Claims No Killer App Justifies the Need for Ultra Fast FTTH Broadband

Consultancy firm Analysys Mason, which was recently appointed by six French governmental and public bodies to conduct a prospective study on the services that would justify the need for ultra-fast fibre optic broadband technology (e.g. 100Mbps+ FTTH), has today published its conclusions. The results, which found that “no killer application justifies the need” for ultra-fast fibre (except perhaps IPTV), might also have some relevance for the UK market.

Wispa Limited, an outspoken group of consultants who passionately believe Wales (UK) deserves better broadband, claims to have established the “root cause” of the country’s broadband issues. Apparently the problem is that Wales simply has too many Trees and only their “systematic removal” will solve this.

UPD Survey Claims Most UK Consumers Will Pay Extra for Superfast Broadband

The results from 830 respondents (polled during February 2012) to our latest monthly reader survey has revealed that almost three quarters (71%) of respondents would be willing to pay more to upgrade their current service with a reliable superfast broadband (25Mbps+) connection, yet over half (55%) still point to a lack of availability as being the main barrier to their adoption.

Scientists working at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the University of Padova have experimentally demonstrated, in a real-world setting, that it is possible to simultaneously transmit multiple independent radio channels, on the same frequency, via the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band. Crucially the potential now exists to “dramatically increase the capacity of any frequency band,” which would have massive implications for other wireless solutions.
