The Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) office has announced plans to spend £1 million on a roll-out of free wireless Internet (WiFi) connectivity across all 800 buses in its fleet during 2014. The fleet will also benefit from real-time GPS tracking to improve live timetable accuracy.

The £14.57m CSW Broadband partnership of 8 local authorities, which aims to ensure that BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network is made available to 92% of Coventry, 96% of Solihull and 91% of Warwickshire in England (overall 91% will get speeds of 24Mbps+) by spring 2016, has been expanded by +6,480 additional premises.

CityFibre, which has deployed fibre optic networks in several towns and cities (e.g. York, Bournemouth etc.) around the United Kingdom, have signed a strategic partnership deal with Ask4 that will allow the ISP to offer “ultrafast, gigabit-speed internet services” via CFs existing network(s).

A time consuming Freedom of Information (FoI) request conducted by Richard Brown has successfully secured a redacted version of the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) supported ‘Next Generation Broadband’ roll-out contract for Wales, which was agreed between BT and the Welsh Government and contains a lot of interesting details about service speed.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica), which last month announced that their unbundled (LLU) wholesale fixed line broadband platform (formerly BE Wholesale) would be closed down at the end of February 2014 (here), has now confirmed that the remaining business services will also be switched to BT.

Several local authorities across the Greater Manchester area (e.g. Bolton, Salford etc.) in North West England have each agreed to contribute £312,500 (total £2.5 million) to help boost superfast broadband (30Mbps+) coverage for SME businesses.

BT Wholesale have once again updated their broadband availability checker and this time they’ve added some additional information to help with the speed predictions on ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband lines (aka – “fibre broadband” as some ISPs describe it).

The £27.3 million Superfast Staffordshire project in England (West Midlands), which aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 97% (95% will get superfast speeds of 25Mbps+) of local premises by Spring 2016, has today published its official deployment map.

The World Wide Web Foundation, a non-profit organization established by WWW inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, has today published its annual 2013 Web Index that ranks 81 countries by broadband access quality, affordability and Internet related policies. Happily the United Kingdom remains in 3rd place and even improved its score slightly.

The not for profit B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) network, which is rolling out a “hyperfast” 1000Mbps capable and community-built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband service in rural Lancashire (England), has nearly connected 350 properties to its platform and that’s roughly the point at which they expect to break-even.

Linpop (Linpop Broadband Now), a small fixed wireless broadband ISP that serves residents and businesses in the Trent Valley area of rural North Lincolnshire (England), has been rescued (merger) for an undisclosed sum by local provider Quickline after it fell into administration last month.

The telecoms regulator has today launched an all-encompassing Mobile Data Strategy consultation that will attempt to identify and free-up a maximum of 881MHz in additional downlink radio spectrum (the 600MHz, 700MHz, 2.3GHz, 2.7GHz, 3.4GHz and 3.7GHz bands) for use by superfast 4G and future 5G style Mobile Broadband services.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK telecoms network, has announced plans to launch a full field trial of its new Mobile Infill Infrastructure Solution (MiiS). The small cells based product is designed to leverage the existing fixed line network to provide mobile services into parts of the country that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage.
