The Superfast Dorset scheme in southern England, which is worth £31.75 million and supported by the local councils, Broadband Delivery UK office and BT, has announced the next 8 telephone exchange areas in the county to benefit from an upgrade to faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) based Internet connectivity.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IEF) has called on broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom to help tackle malware (malicious software and viruses) by, for example, restricting Internet access to infected computers and devices (e.g. PCs, Tablets etc.).

The communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has examined 11 cities across the United Kingdom to assess the availability of standard and superfast broadband Internet connectivity. Overall the study found that faster Next Generation Access (NGA) networks now reach around 90% in most of the cities but wide variations remain.

The current CEO of Virgin Media (Liberty Global), Tom Mockridge, has branded Sky Broadband’s rival service as “lousy” and said that their new offer of 24 months free unlimited broadband alongside the Sky Sports TV bundle “means their broadband is maybe not that good“. Mockridge acted as BSkyB’s deputy chairman between 2012 and early 2013.

The High Court in London has today ruled that YouView, which offers a subscription-free broadband based TV (IPTV) service via retail and through ISPs like BT and TalkTalk, infringes upon a trade mark (YourView) owned by online billing firm Total Ltd.

Several Internet Service Providers are this morning reporting a number of seemingly related Major Service Outages (MSO) on BT Wholesale’s broadband network, which appears to be causing issues of intermittent Internet connectivity across England’s East Anglia region and some of the surrounding areas (e.g. Norfolk, Suffolk, North Essex).

Commuters passing through St Pancras railway station, which is part of the 108-kilometre long High Speed 1 route (Channel Tunnel Rail Link), can now get online thanks to the launch of a new free WiFi wireless Internet service that’s claimed to be “ten times faster than the average home or office broadband“. But unfortunately there’s a catch.

A promotional Twitter account for all things Cornish has claimed that Cornwall now has the “highest level of FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premises) coverage in the UK“, with the service allegedly being “available” (premises passed) to around 62,000 local homes and businesses, and it’s all thanks to the joint £132m EU and BT “Big Build” Superfast Cornwall scheme.

The perceived value that a good broadband ISP connection can add to a house, especially one in a rural area, will always be subject to each individuals own perspective, but few doubt its importance. So spare a thought for the owners of a 3 bedroom house that has gone unsold for 10 years due to poor local connectivity.. and a graveyard.

The communications regulator has given preliminary approval to a proposal by the sibling of Hong Kong telecoms giant PCCW (HKT) and parent to London-based wireless ISP Relish, UK Broadband Limited, which is seeking an indefinite extension to its existing licence for radio spectrum within the 3.4GHz band.

Comparison site Simplifydigital.co.uk has announced the winners of their annual 2014 Customer Choice Awards, which saw all of the biggest broadband ISPs, except BT and EE, win various categories based on their levels of customer satisfaction. But sadly you won’t find any smaller ISPs listed.
