Vodafone UK Scrap No Expiry for OLD PAYG Mobile Broadband Users

One of the problems with modern pay-as-you-go Mobile Broadband packages is that you get a short expiry time of 30 or 90 days on the data allowance but it didn’t use to be that way. Back in 2008/9 Vodafone launched a dongle (USB Modem) with a “no expiry” period, which many customers have continued to use.. until now.

UPD ISPs BT and EE Attract Most Home Broadband Complaints in Q4 2013

BT and EE’s home broadband packages generated the highest level of customer gripes during the final quarter of 2013. The data, which comes from Ofcom’s quarterly consumer complaints report, also revealed that TalkTalk were the worst for fixed phone providers, while Orange UK came bottom for mobile and BT also failed at Pay TV.

Sckipio Predicts Ultrafast 1Gbps G.fast Broadband Deployments for 2015

Israel-based modem maker Sckipio has predicted that pressure from rival cable platforms could push telecoms operators like BT in the UK to begin rolling out next gen G.fast (aka – FTTC2 / ITU G.9700) broadband technology, which might deliver speeds of up to 1000Mbps over some hybrid fibre optic and copper lines, much sooner than expected.

EE UK Offers 6 Months Half Price Unlimited FTTC Home Broadband

Mobile and Internet provider EE will today expand the half price promotion on their unlimited superfast “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) packages to cover the first 6 months of service. In addition, the one-off connection fee has also been reduced from £50 to just £25.

North Lincolnshire UK Shows How to do a Proper BDUK Broadband Map

The North Lincolnshire Council in England deserves some credit after they published a fairly detailed and interactive postcode map of the local Northernlincs Broadband (NLBB) project, which is working with BT to ensure that “92.5% of premises in each area will have access to superfast broadband” (FTTC) by spring 2015.

EU and UK Next Gen Broadband Uptake Improves But 100Mbps Still Rare

A new report into the state of Internet connectivity around Europe (price and speed) has today revealed that nearly one in five EU fixed broadband subscriptions went to a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service but ultrafast connections (100Mbps+) are still rare, with penetration (subscriptions as a % of population) standing at just 1.2% (0.4% in the UK).

BT and EE Finalise and Sign UK Mobile Virtual Network Operator Deal

BT has today signed a multi-year agreement that will allow them to build a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform and services using EE’s 2G, 3G and 4G based network in the United Kingdom, which also means they’ll be “carefully” parting ways with their existing MVNO partner Vodafone UK.

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Maria Miller (MP), has announced that their new £10 million Competitive Fund, which aims to “test innovative solutions to deliver superfast broadband services to the most difficult to reach areas” (i.e. the rural / final 5% of the United Kingdom), is now open for bids in three different categories.

HiWiFi Extends 16Mbps Wireless Broadband to Hannington Village

Basingstoke-based ISP HiWiFi has confirmed that their 16Mbps capable fixed wireless broadband network is now available to over 300 people in the English civil parish village of Hannington in the county of Hampshire.

The annual Digital Music Report 2014 from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has claimed that the website blocking measures implemented by ISPs have become a “widely-accepted and effective way of curbing piracy online“, especially in Europe and the UK where BitTorrent (P2P) file sharing traffic is said to have fallen.

At present you’d be hard pressed to find an ISP that offers an up to 40-80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based superfast broadband service with anything less than a 12 month contract, which is how it comes packaged by the supplier. But Devon-based ISP Pulse8 has decided to do away with this and take a risk on a 1 month term.

Ofcom Revising Broadband Speed Code of Practice for UK ISPs

The communications regulator has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’re currently working to finalise a number of revisions to their Voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband Speeds, which requires ISPs to adhere to a certain set of standards when communicating what performance a customer can expect to receive.

The Chairmen of two enterprise partnerships – Buckinghamshire Business First and Oxfordshire Business First – have written an open letter to the Government and Ofcom that criticises the regulators “selective ranking” of the UK as number one in Europe for superfast broadband and calls on the country’s leaders “not to slip into complacency“.

UPD Which? Awards the Best UK ISPs and Seek Broadband Speed Guarantee

Consumer magazine Which? has today praised smaller broadband and phone providers for their quality, called for all ISPs to offer a Broadband Speed Guarantee to customers and awarded its coveted Recommended Provider gong to The Utility Warehouse and John Lewis in their latest consumer satisfaction survey. Zen Internet and PlusNet also won ‘Recommended’ status under the broadband-only section.
