Analysts working at Arieso have warned of an “explosive growth in mobile data usage“, fuelled by the latest generation of LTE based Mobile Broadband services, where just 0.1% of 4G customers were found to be “data hogs” that consume more than 50% of all downlink data (globally). iPhone5s owners were also named as the hungriest for data.

The latest generation of Gigabit (1.3Gbps) capable WiFi wireless home networking standard (WLAN), better known as 802.11ac, has only just begun to hit store shelves in its final form and now the next iteration (IEEE 802.11ac-2013) has been approved that will push your local network speeds up to 7Gbps (Gigabits per second).

It’s arguably the least surprising development of the year. Broadband ISP PlusNet has confirmed that it intends to follow BT’s example (parent company) and launch their own network-level Internet filter to block (censorship) adult and piracy websites, which will most likely replace its bundled McAfee security solution.

Business Internet provider Metronet UK has extended the reach of their hybrid fibre optic (Dark Fibre) and “high capacity” carrier grade wireless network, which offers service speeds of between 1Mbps to 10Gbps, into the market town of Burnley in Lancashire (England).

Broadband ISP PlusNet, which is owned by BT, has become the latest Internet provider to face criticism today for lax security after it was revealed that their registration form for new customers doesn’t sit behind a secure web (HTTPS) connection and is instead transmitted without encryption.

Cable operator Virgin Media has had one of its Direct Mailing (booklet) adverts banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after it failed to make immediately clear that the half price offer it was peddling didn’t apply to the cost of line rental.

It’s surprising this hasn’t happened sooner. The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has, following a complaint by EE, banned several adverts for Three UK after they “misleadingly” claimed to offer an “Ultrafast” connection using their “3.9G” (DC-HSDPA) Mobile Broadband network.

Telecom giants Alcatel-Lucent and BT have today announced that a field trial of new Flexgrid technology has helped to deliver data speeds of up to 1.4Tbps (Terabits per second) over an existing “commercial grade” fibre optic link using a “record spectral efficiency” of 5.7 bits per second per Hertz (b/s/Hz).

The Gambling Commission, which was set-up under the Gambling Act 2005 to regulate commercial gambling in Great Britain, has been told by two of the country’s largest broadband ISPs that it will need to seek a court order before they can impede access to unlicensed gambling websites.

Ofcom has today given the “green light” to the introduction of a new regulatory framework that will support the launch of “up to 10-times faster” Satellite-based broadband technology (i.e. a maximum speed of 50Mbps to a single earth station or more than 10Mbps to an individual passenger) on moving vehicles like Trains, Aircraft and Ships.
